Need to buy new alternator. Which one Should I get?

I'm looking to replace the POS autozone alternator I have on my RS Camaro 5.0 (TBI). I want to get a good one for under $100. What do you guys suggest? And if you feel this is a stupid question, feel free to keep it to yourself.

Re: Need to buy new alternator. Which one Should I get?

You can rebuild your existing one for half that price. There are instructions available to do so, and requires very few special tools (other than a soldering iron and solder).

For $100, you can get a kit from eBay that upgrades the stock 105A alternator to a 180A alternator.

Only problem I encountered rebuilding my alt, after Advance wouldn't honor the lifetime warranty on it, was when the front shaft nut kept coming loose and letting the pulley slip on the shaft and the fan hit the front housing and made an awful buzzing noise. Locking compound solved that...

Well the Alternator I have is a peice of crap. I considered rebuilding it, only to come to the conclusion that I would have a rebuilt peice of crap.

I look at it this way... A working POS alternator is better than a dead car.

If you really feel that way, I'd go for the upgrade kit. Only parts you would reuse of the stock alt are the housings, pulley and fan, and the rotor.

Why don't you call Power Master customer service at 630-957-4019 and ask them what they have in the way of inexpensive alternators but most importantly which one is appropriate for your car. I called them twice in the past two weeks for help in getting a new alt for my car.

... Because he probably already has one...

Messed up a bit with that upgrade kit. It still requires a regulator and rectifier...

Re: Need to buy new alternator. Which one Should I get?

I think one of the problems with my current car is a faulty Voltage Regulator. Thanks anyway though.

Re: Need to buy new alternator. Which one Should I get?

Voltage regulator is like $20. Probably the easiest thing to replace in the alternator other than the brush holder, once you get the stator and deflector plastic out of the way. When I find the link to the alternator parts site, I'll post it. I know the regulator was cheaper than the rectifier when my rectifier went out, and the rectifier was $35 with shipping and crap...

http://store.alternatorparts.com/regulator-16.aspx

Take your pick... The only connection needing to be soldered (and/or unsoldered) is the bridge between the rectifier assembly and the regulator, the pin sticking straight up.

I have blown up more cs130 than anyone alive. I went to a cs144 and couldn't be happier. It is bigger, cools better and puts out more juice.
