Window switch

Is my stock window switch strong enough to power both windows on one switch?

Re: Window switch

The switch itself *should* be able to handle the current of both windows.

However, this is generally not a good idea. Due to slight differences in wear and tear on the motors themselves (one always going slightly faster than the other) you would be causing undue wear/tear on the faster motor by keeping it energized long enough for the lagging window to catch up.

Re: Window switch

The switches control relays that power the motors. You can run both through one switch with no problem.

Re: Window switch

My guess: Both windows are usually down at the same time anyway. Why not just hit one switch.

Re: Window switch

Good point rarebmx.
91 1LE- I'm sorry but there are no relays for power window motors. That is part of the reason they are so slow. Direct 12gauge wire runs from the fuse panel to the switch and then back to the motors in the door. Some people have incorporated relays to power the windows from the battery to the motor directly which helps some. When I was rebuilding my camaro I ran a hot wire from the battery directly to the motor but found negligible gains in the speed in which it traveled up or down.

Re: Window switch

thanks for the help! now for my reasoning............ i switched to a 4th gen console and i just cant figure out where to mount both switches, the power mirror switch, and an air/fuel gauge. so im gonna make a plate and put one window switch, the mirror switch, and my gauge right where the cig lighter and small cubby is. my ratchet shift takes up most of the shift plate. thanks again!
