hatch switch turns engine??? (Fixed)
so i got a V6 92 camaro rs about a month ago. when i got it the dome, side mirrors, power locks, and hatch switch wouldnt work. changed the fuse and all but the locks would work. id hear a clicking but nothing would happen. not concerned about that at the moment. but when i tried the hatch switch it started turning the motor like trying to turn my car on. im no expert or anything like that but im pretty sure that isnt supposed to be happening. oh and the hatch wouldnt open. obviously.... i really wouldnt mind just using the key to open the hatch BUT key wont open it. key only seems to work on the driver door and ignition.
the pull down motor works cause i poped it open with a flat head from the inside. my guess is some1 put a wire where it shouldnt go or something. tried following the wire with no luck. hoping som1 here can help me out a bit more. any advise would be greatly appreciated

Re: hatch switch turns engine???
Assume you have an auto trans. I have read a couple of threads similar with this question. Not sure if the 92 hatch switch circuit is the same as my 86 circuit (attached below), but here is my theory.
Looks like for cheapness, GM has the ground for the hatch release relay piggy-backed to the top of the park/neutral lock-out switch and thru the start solenoid, so that the hatch can only be release in p/n.
In effect, this also allows the hatch release switch to supply +12v to the start solenoid via the yellow wire 3 and the p/n switch, exactly the same way as the ign switch does in the bulb test/crank position.
The only difference is the resistance of the release relay coil, which must limit the current enough, so that the release switch is incapable of operating the start solenoid.
So something has changed in this balancing act. The release relay coil has decreased resistance and is passing more current, or the start solenoid is requiring less current to operate for some reason. Most likely the release relay coil has a full or partial short.

Re: hatch switch turns engine???
is there any way to bypass this? maybe cutting the yellow wire? I'm not gonna jump right in and do this, I wanna find some more info on this first. I've been searching the forum for a couple days now with no luck

Re: hatch switch turns engine???
Like I said, this is just my rough theory looking at my 86 circuit which may not completely apply to you.
I'm thinking your vats should be in the mix there too somewhere, locking out the starter and preventing the starter from operating, obviously it isn't. Sorry don't have a 92 vats circuit.
Find the relay, and measure the coil with a DMM (should be maybe 30-50 ohms at a rough guess) or replace with a cheap one from the jy. Don't just cut the yellow wire (if applicable), or your hatch button won't ever release the hatch.
Sorry but I don't know where the relay's stock location is, esp in the 92. In my 86 it's in a socket that just hangs out of the interior loom, but all my internal wiring was re-routed in my rhd swap by a PO.
Does the hatch button pop the hatch like it should, as well as crank the engine?

Re: hatch switch turns engine???
no it doesn't actually. has me thinking the wiring isn't even goin to the pull down motor. or maybe there is a cut wire somewhere, I took I'm all my center console and kick boards I really didn't want to rip out the carpet to follow the wiring. at the moment I don't have anything to test currents with, i'll have to take some more time tryin to figure something out. i really have no electrical skills

Re: hatch switch turns engine???
If the 86 circuit is applicable, bet it's a shorted relay coil. It would crank the engine and fail to pop the hatch, even with all the factory wiring intact.
If you don't have a multimeter or the know-how to use it to troubleshoot at this time, best you can do is just swap the relay out.

ok so I think I know what shorted it out. my ttop leaks right onto the hatch switch. would I have to switch out the relay or would a new switch possibly help

Re: hatch switch turns engine??? (fixed)
so I guess I had a bad ground or something, I just cut the green wire and grounded it, now the hatch release switch works just fine and the engine doesn't crank anymore when I try to open the hatch
