no power to ac compressor
I recently got an 87 camaro iroc z with a 305 in it, but it had been sitting since 95 and had a small problem with rats. They chewed up a lot of the wiring, but i think i got all if not most of the wires fixed. however when i try to get the ac working, the clutch will not engage. I used a test light to see if there was power getting to the clutch, no. But when i wire the Black and green wire terminals to a battery, the clutch will engage... i need help tracing the wires back through everything

Re: no power to ac compressor
You may want to try to jumper the low pressure switch connector to see if the compressor kicks in. Don't run it that way unless you are charging it but its an easy way to see if the compressor runs.

Re: no power to ac compressor
yeah i did that and it acted like it would engage...didnt have the motor running, but the unit itself seems pretty solid...just an issue somewhere getting power directly to the compressor

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the light green wire on the pressure cycling switch.
Is there power there when the key is in the RUN position and the AC controls are set to AC?

Re: no power to ac compressor
yeah i have a voltage tester, if there is power to the pressure switch, will the compressor be stopped from engaging due to a lack of freon?

Re: no power to ac compressor
just messed with it a little, no power to the clutch, none to the ac cutoff switch, and none to the two terminals at the top of the condenser, also no blown fuses

In post #5 you implied you heard the comp clutch click.
That’s consistent with power on the low pressure switch.
Not if the rest of the system is good.
Sounds like you pulled a wire after post #5.
Pull the HVAC panel enuff to probe light green wire with the key in the RUN position, and the control in the AC on mode.
Is there power there?

Re: no power to ac compressor
I'm having the same problem with my 1988 v6 Camaro, the only way I can get my ac compressor to turn on is if I have hooked to a toggle switch, there is no power going through either of the plug wires that clip into the compressor. The fuse is good as well. Where else should I look for a problem at?

Re: no power to ac compressor
Yes there is, I'm thinking it may be the relay, because I disconnected it and switches it with the other and when I do that my car won't start, but when I switch it back it starts up!
Re: no power to ac compressor
Everything was working, but my AC was howling, so I contacted Oreileys. My warranty ran out two days ago. The manager said don't worry. So I took the old compressor off and an extra plug wasn't on the new compressor. Oreileys said to fill the system, it should be fine. It didn't work. Til I took a metal staple and closed the circuit. Cold air and everything. Then the metal started arcking. I quickly undid it. Now all wires are correctly hooked up, but the fan inside the car doesn't work at all. I can't make the compressor come on so I can refill the system. Is there a fuse I can't find? Shouldn't be the relay, the fan will work on lower speeds if the relay is bad.
