battery not charging and had it tested

my car wouldnt hold a charge so today i just bought a new battery and had my alt tested... And it tested fine... Checked connetction to battery... The previous owner broke the clip on the connector to the alt from the car but i zip tied it for now one is on the way to oriellys... Anyways i wires to that connector is one white and one red... I am assuming the white is to the voltemeter and red is to a 12volt source when the key is on??? Could there be a problem or short in those wires??? Any other ideas???

Re: battery not charging and had it tested

The serpentine alternators are a standard 3 wire. The thicker wire on the back pole is the output/charging wire, this should go to the battery or a distribution point. The white or brown wire is a 12 volt key on ignition wire. The remaining red wire is the sensing voltage wire, it should go to the starter, distribution point or battery. Make certain that the output wire and voltage sensing wire are not going to the same location. Your problem could be with the voltage sensing wire.

Re: battery not charging and had it tested

i switched alts and a couple other things and got it fixed!!!!!!!!!!!! Now my problem is the guy who had this before me put a ton of bandaids on bullet holes... The spliced into a purple wire(goes to starter) and put a cheesy push button... What wire do i need to connect to the purple wire so i can use my key to start... I have no ecm no nothing i went to carb and i dont even have a/c... All im wondering is if i can run the purple wire directly to my ignition or key??????

You can but you would be bypassing the neutral “safety” switch.

If you want to keep the stock configuration use the
yellow wire from the Starter Enable Relay.
