The switch that is broken is for cancelling the cruise control when you touch the brakes. The other switch should have an orange and a light blue wire. The orange wire should be hot all the time, you can check that. You can also inject 12V into the light blue wire and the lights should come on. First though, check the STOP/HAZ fuse in the bottom right corner of the fuse box.

Check the fuse box. This happened to me the other day. My hazards and brake lights and turnsignals stopped working. The fuse, STOP/HAZ was simply blown.

Okay so i had already checked the fuses that "were" there just so happens that the previous owner decided having a fuse in the spot for the brake lights was unnecesary needless to say stuck a fuse in and they worked and of course i had already taken my dash apart and pulled the edge of the carpet up to start tracing wires but thanks guys appreciate the help

always- always- check the fuses first... followed by grounds.. then start looking at switches..

checked all my fuses replaced one that was for courtesy lights just never thought to check for a missing one that is the only missing one though. Next i assumed the switch since it was broke(the cruise one not knowing thats what it was for) and then i was about to chase the ground wires

Re: No brake lights or hazard lights?

Hey all,

So I am having a similar problem....my brake lights dont come on on my 88 GTA. However, the hazards do & I checked the fuse and it is fine. Tail lights come on just fine as well when on.

Thoughts on this one?

Check the brake pedal switch. It is attached to the pedal assembly.
It has three wires:
- orange - constant power
- light blue - for brake lights - goes into the steering column multifunction switch
- light blue/black - for the 3rd brake light

You should find power on the orange wire. And you should find power on the light blue wires with the brake pedal slightly depressed.

Let us know what you find.

In the worst case, you can always get one from a salvage yard. Or you can check fleaBay.

Thank you I will check this when I get back to the shop where I store my car... (both the brake lights + the 3rd brake light in the spoiler is dont light up if it makes a difference). Also, I didnt think of this, not sure if it is related, but my highbeams dont work either the turnsignal lever won't 'switch' from lows to hights (doesnt even move).

That is very likely an unrelated issue. Did you try tilting the column all the way up and all the way down? Does the hi/lo beam switch work in any extreme position?
If the lever won't even budge, it might be either broken or preloaded from the switch rod that runs along the column and actuates the actual switch under the dash (bolted to the side of the column). The rod might have popped out of its groove or something, that's always a possibility.
I would recommend trying to gain access to the switch itself and loosening it to see whether that will free the rod and stalk. If the rod is free but the stalk still doesn't move, I would recommend pulling the steering wheel off to investigate the multi-function switch.
Here's an article on adjusting the hi/lo beam switch with pictures: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=16
