Cold start issues wiring?

1989 Iroc Z 5.7 TPI. Let me start with the fact that the car RUNS PERFECTLY. no rough idle, high idle, missfires, anything. but it takes anywhere between 1 and 60 cranks to start after sitting over night. some cranks it will try to fire, some it will not. it just all of th sudden starts somewhere between 1 and 60. but when it sits for a few hours, you can get in and start it right up every time. at first the problem was intermittant, but now it is every time it sits over night or long periods of time. We have been attacking this from all angles. Distributor, coil, plugs, fuel pump/ filter, battery, IAC. great fuel pressure and spark. The car has also started doing this crap where it will be running great and all the sudden quits like someone turned the ignition off. then you can start it right back up and keep driving. I put a 58mm throtle body on the car as well as a hypertech chip but that was all way prior to the issues now. I bet i have put 500 bucks in parts to find what is wrong. it breaks my heart to see the car sit in the garage where it was parked last night until its fixed. someone please hel I don't know what to target next. MAF? Ignition? it has a new ignition cylander too. Oil pressure? Wiring harness? Injectors/fuel rail. I'm done wasting money on random guesses

Re: Cold start issues wiring?

have you checked the ignition module in the distributor? common problem on these. i was driving one day years ago and the car just shut off on me. turned out to be the ignition module.

Can you hear the fuel pump prime when you 1st turn the key on?
If not you are waiting for the oil pressure switch to operate the pump after theoil pressure has got high enough by cranking engine over

Two big wastes of $$$$ 58mm TB not needed unless you have a 383
and a off the shelf chip

Re: Cold start issues wiring?

It is not throwing any codes and I just changed the OPS hoping that fixed it. We will know tomorrow.

Not the problem .
The OPS is the backup should the ECM not operate the relay , or the relay is faulty , or wiring to relay is faulty
The fact the engine starts with extended cranking shows the OPS is working fine and operating the fuel pump ;
once you crank the engine over long enough to get the OP up

Should be checking pump relay operation ,
does it actually work at all , does it give the 2 sec prime that it is supposed to do when you first turn the key on?

If you temporarily put 12V to terminal G of the ALDL connector that will make the pump run full time.
If you have the pump running before a cold start and the engine fires up with little cranking then you know your cold start
problem is due to a lack of fuel pressure

Re: Cold start issues wiring?

Everything checks out. This crap makes no sense! It's not even that the car is cold. Once it starts for the first time, you can immediately shut it off and it'll start right back up. EVERY TIME. No codes, no nothing. as of tonight, we have completely gone back to stock and went over the complete car. Great fuel pressure, spark, battery. Still takes forever to start. oh and still randomly quits.
