i turn the key and nothing happens, the dashlights use to come on but now that doesnt even happen, car makes no noise at all, what could it be???? need help asap thats the video i took, please watch

 

The key looks like it's a VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System) key,
and that's what the symptoms are when a) the steering column
key sensor input to the VATS module has failed, or b) the VATS
control module itself has failed. If you can determine your vehicle
is in fact VATS equipped (a small sticker sticker on a window
somewhere??), then do a search here -- there's an abundance
of info available.

I've had 2 89s and both were VATS. Sounds like that could be the problem.

 

So just buy a new VATS module? Where would I get one?

 

VATS wont keep lights from coming on and everything else electrical in the car from working. All VATS does is keep the engine from turning over and starting. Sounds like youre not getting any power to the cabin.

First, check to make sure your battery terminals arent loose or corroded. You might also want to make sure your battery isnt completely dead.
If that checks out, then youll need to jack the car up and check the fusable links at the starter. There should be a couple of black looking barrels on some wires that connect to the starter. Use a multimeter to probe on both sides of that black piece and make sure youre getting 12v on both sides. Those fusable links are the most common reason for loosing power.

 

The lights use to come on like I said in the video, but they stopped coming on now. Before any of this happened when I would drive for a wile, turn the car off and go to turn it back on it wouldn't work , id have to turn the ignition to off and try again then it would start right up

 

it not just a VATS issue. VATS my be playing a part. but from the video, you got some electrical issues. youll have to start tracing things from the battery back until you find the culprit. for whatever reason, youre not getting juice inside the car. have you checked the battery connections yet?

 

Yeah I've checked that already, I even bought new battery connectors things

 

After re-reading the post I have to agree that it's most likely an electrical problem and not specifically a VATS issue. Check all of your connections from the battery back. Don't forget to check your ground wires. It could even be just a bad battery. I'd get that checked first.

 

i tried a new battery today and it seemed to start just fine, thanks everyone for your help, goood thing i didnt go buy a new starter like i was going to

 

That's great but now if it doesn't start in a day or two, you probably have a bad alternator. Good luck!
