Alternator help

So here goes. Forget how and why my 87 Gta is wired how it is but the current setup is as follows. 90% of factory wiring has been removed carb swap and many more. My current issue is the charging system. I was having trouble getting my alternator to charge. Other than the pos battery lead it has a 3 wire plug w a big red small brown And small brown/white wires. By jumping the brown/white to the red wire I can get the thing to charge. Now. As an alternative to a manual switch, which I don't mind doing. Can I put in a sort of voltage regulator or something that will automatically keep my battery charged up? How do I do that? Or should I just put in yet another annoying manual switch and constantly watch the gauge? Sry for my ignorance. You guys are always a big help

Re: Alternator help

Thank you for the helpful diagram. It doesn't help me with my current situation however. I currently have 'f' wire jumped to the 's' wire which will charge my battery. The 'L' wire is used on my plug with an unknown purpose to me. But with my current setup the battery will overcharge. How do I avoid this? Keep in mind most of the factory wires and functions as well as the ECM are no longer in the car. Thx again for the replies

Redd, the diagram from Tuned shows F and P terminals not used.

However on your car, if you’re using a stock type alt, F terminal should be connected to a
hot in run line, thru a 10 amp fuse.

Undo any haywire by the PO.

Make sure the L terminal hooked up as in the diagram shown by
Tuned.

Happy Racing!

it's called the wake-up circuit, the hole idea of it is to magnetise the rotor and split the draw between battery and alternator while the engine isn't running. what happened is either you have a resistance in line before the voltage regulator, or the voltage regulator is no good. to fix this you could 1)either keep doin what your doin, 2) replace the voltage regulator, 3)replace the alternator, or 4) convert the multi-wire alternator into a single wire alternator ( if you go this route you alternator will recharge batterie just fine, but on initial fire up you will need to excite the rotor by beifly rising the rpm at the alternator to 1500rpm and then you can idol) this one is popular on heavy equipment.
