One wire Alternator conversion?

I have a 92 RS former 305 TBI car with two wire alternator within the factory serpentine system, is it possible to simplify this to a one wire unit, by snipping the small wire and looping it to the S-attachment nut and leaving the larger positive wire to the starter, starter solenoid, or battery for that matter? If that is not the way to do it, what is, because this is how we did it in the past? Thanks in advance....
