Speedo and Dash question.
I put this up in the interior thread, but having thought about it, it more likely belongs here. Long story short, after much debate and discussion with people, I decided to combine both Trans Ams I have into one car, taking the best parts of both.
The 88 GTA is in the middle of getting the T56 originally intended for the 84 TA. The swap itself is straightforward and easy, the problem I have is this.
The T56 was modded for the 84 over two years ago. So it has a cable speedo, I initially thought just swapping the speedo would do the trick, of course it couldn't be that easy, as I found what you guys likely already know, the speedo is integrated onto the printed circuit. Since the whole idea here was to do the swap for the cost of fluids (I have all the parts), I don't even want to hear the terms; "new tailhousing" and "dakota box"; I flat out refuse to go there.
So ideas are revolving around, re pinning the connectors for the cluster to work with the 84 cluster, swapping the dash entirely, swapping wiring harnesses, or some other method. There has to be a way to do this. Simply swapping the cluster won't work from what I've found in the FSMs.
Does anyone have any input or will I have to reinstall the GTA cluster and use a chart based on gear and RPM or a GPS speedo in my phone? I am half joking about the last two ideas, but if there is a better way to make this work, that doesn't involve massive wiring or something, I'm all for it.
