Electric Hatch release upgrade
ok, I do not have the push button hatch release on my 86' T/A. I had it on my previous firebird and loved it. I just bought the solenoid off Ebay. Can I just install the solenoid on my existing hatch setup and run wires for power and illuminating the switch? or is there more to this?

i think GM also put a relay in the system, too.. at least i think that's what that relay under my center console was for..

There is less to it. The connector for the switch is already tucked behind the center switch console. You just need to cut a hole or get a piece with the correct number of holes. The wiring in the trunk is all there. Just plug in the solenoid lead. The hardest part is finding the connector under the passenger side dash and plugging in the relay. All plug and play.

Re: Electric Hatch release upgrade
Be sure that you've got the correct soleniod before geting to involved in the upgrade.
The 82-85 Hatch release soleniod is NOT the same as the 86-91 hatch release soleniod. The soleniod used on the 86+ PPD hatch motors will not work on a 82-85 body.

Re: Electric Hatch release upgrade
I had no idea there was a difference. My car is an 86' model. The description on Ebay said 82-92. I know some of the componants to the 91 and 92 hatch pull down motor was different but thought the solenoid was the same.

Re: Electric Hatch release upgrade
I found a pic:

This one will work on 86-91 hatch motors...... The manually operated cable gets removed and this soleniod operated cable gets screwed to the PPD unit.
82-85 soleniods will not fit a PPD motor & the 92 hatch release is a completely different unit so stay away from that one too !

Ok, I the one I bought looks to be like the one in the picture. My car is an 86' model. Whats the different between the one for the earlier car and the 87-90' solenoid?

This is a picture of the 82-85 Soleniod..... Obviously not compatable with PPD cars.
