Horn always on

Iv been troubleshooting a horn issue for the past 2 days, and I know it is wiring.

They are always on.

I have pulled the horns, since that was the easiest way to shut it up.

I disconnect the C210 connector and jiggle the wire and can hear the relay click. How is the wire actually routed? I know it goes from the horn button to the convenience center, but is it direct or go somewhere off to oblivion then come back? Is there any common rub places to look for?

Any other suggestions?

Thanx in advance.

Usually a problem with the center pad in the wheel when this happens (horn button). Pull it off and see what's happening.

The wire is mounted by a twist lock connector. Take it out and see if it stays on. May be cracked and the spring is grounding on the wheel hub.

Re: Horn always on

well, now the relay isnt clicking at all (brand new relay), and the horn isnt honking.

And then I found this:

Name: IMG_20140105_123537_463.jpg
Views: 29
Size: 71.2 KBNote the thick yellow wire in front with a spade splice, butt splice, 1in long wire, another butt splice, then nothing.

I see a harness swap in its sometime future.

But as for this issue, I am calling it quits for now due to frustration, and that find pissing me off.

Re: Horn always on

That broken wire combo frankenstein thing was a starter wire. Replaced with proper splices and correct gauge wire.

Horn still doesnt work.

Looks like a hack job, was the car like this when you bought it. Solder and heat shrink tubing are your friends.

Looks like connectors for tapping in with spade connectors. Maybe alarm system?

Connect a voltmeter to pin J of the horn relay, (you can remove the relay and probe the socket which might make it easier) what is the reading on the voltmeter?

Now press the horn button on the steering wheel, now what is the reading on the voltmeter?

Re: Horn always on

The cars wiring is a total mess., was like that when I bought it. Every harness is hacked and spliced. I probably should replace the entire dash harness if I can find one, instead of fixing every little thing that breaks.

The car does have keyless entry (PO installed), there might have been an alarm in it at one point.

There is no continuity from horn button to the relay, but there is at the C210(?) connector (colum side). The wire is f-d somewhere in that disaster of a harness. Im not going to tear into it further for fear of messing up another one of those wonderful splices.

Re: Horn always on

I don't think you could even fit another connector on the white wire with the blue stripe. I feel your pain.

Re: Horn always on

I have replaced that little section of wire. Here is what it was for your viewing pleasure.

Lets recap- Spade adapter, butt connector, piece of bare wire wrapped in burned electrical tape which is just twisted together to the wire with the stripe, butt connector. Gotta love hacks.

Why thanks for the picture. The original hacker was probably bragging all over town how he does all his own wiring

Re: Horn always on

The crimp-on connectors for the spades was for a remote starter system. I put a few of them in until VATS made it such a pain.

used to work with someone at DPW someone who - as a joke - would wire co-worker's horns to their turn signal wires if they left their cars unlocked.
