Here's what I got

86 T/A TPI
Changed MAF. Changed Maf power relay. Changed Maf burn off relay. Changed maf a SECOND time. Still throwing code 33 and 36. Now, after replacing new duralast maf with ANOTHER new duralast maf, noticed slightly different behavior, with first maf it would stumble on throttle application, with replacement maf it revs fine just won't stay running and runs richer than Trump. I'm guessing I need to hunt down another MAF do you guys agree?

Cleaned the **** out of original maf, reinstalled, runs a lot better but now have code 34. Keep in mind I just replaced both maf relays according to this info

Re: Here's what I got

The one thing I can tell you is this ;

I have seen literally dozens of threads of MAF troubles and most come down to not being able to get away with buying a cheap , especially "rebuilt" , MAF . If you do a search using the words "defective MAF" you find an afternoon's reading and will find which brand is trusted (can't recall which , but the one I bought was a couple of hundred , some years back) .

Oh , and , congrats for finally getting one !

Re: Here's what I got

You gotta be kidding me....put the FOURTH one on today, runs good but throws a code 33 instead of 34 FML. I'm convinced its the maf because I've gotten different results with all four of them. I want to try a delco but the only place that has one has a no return policy don't wanna be out 300 bucks

$300 for piece of mind and knowing it's good to go and will probably fix all your troubles? Sounds cheap.

Re: Here's what I got

Instead of a Delco MAF, which is just a Bosch unit anyways (aka same as you're buying, just new not refurb), how about you try one of the new Richporter ones? It's an entirely different design. Richporter MA157. I paid $150 new, and have not had any problems. Oreily carries them I believe, if not the Fleabay has them all over.

That being said, 4 MAFs and continued issues would make me start looking elsewhere into my troubles before buying even more MAFs.

Re: Here's what I got

I had all kinds of trouble with MAF sensors or what I thought was the problem with a car years ago. Wound up changing distributor and maybe the coil and no more problems.

Correct.

Most parts took a quality hit, too. The MAFs seem fine, however, and are still the 'new-style' design.

They own the name and still market some products as Richporter by Spectra too, just to confuse everyone more.

Thanks 4 the input guys...I'm going to order the Walker from RockAuto and if that doesn't work I'm going to go delco and take a loss. I'm convinced its the maf as everyone I've put on has exhibited different behavior

Yes

Part number MA157

Will look different (inside) than the Bosch units.

Re: Here's what I got

Also your cold air intake setup isn't ideal. Heck, it's down right bad for the car.

The MAF needs non turbulent air, aka through a strait section of pipe, to give accurate readings.

Put the stock setup on and see where it gets you........

Re: Here's what I got

I would but I don't have it...bought it with a ripped up stock snorkel attached to pipe pictured...chopped the pipe to make it fit. Dude that had it botched it up pretty bad....fan switch where the sender was supposed to go jumper wire from batt to burnt up fan relay pigtail etc

See what you can do about replacing the bendy party of the tube with a strait section, put the MAF in the middle (similar to a stock setup).

Turbulant air will just kill the MAFs ability to read accurately

Unbelievable that I can't find a specific cold air kit for a car of this popularity

The market dried up. No profit in making one cold air kit a year for the guy that just bought the 2+ decade old red-headed stepchild of GM.

Re: Here's what I got

You can buy one of these, worst case.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/361573397640

I'd suggest a better filter, and building a housing around it to separate the rest of the engine bay from the filter, but hey, it will work way better than that's in there now.

Re: Here's what I got

For what its worth, I bought that one on ebay that thtanner recommended.

It fits with no problems, the MAF is supposed to have a little bracket thing that attaches to the upper radiator support/cover.

I can send a pic if you need to see the stock layout

Here you go, if you need another pic at another angle or something, let me know. (Yes I got the red intake & yes it sounds good when flooring it haha).

But you can see the metal bracket that uses two bolts on the pass. side of the upper radiator support/shroud.

Sharp set up. That's the intake from eBay? If so ordering it tonight. Also, that bracket is long gone but I shouldn't NEED it to mount maf right? Not at home to check but I don't believe my mass pigtail would reach that far

After 4 MAF replacements,I don't know!!I don't think your problem is the MAF sensor, I think it's your setup
Did you check for vac leaks??

I couldn't find any, then again don't know what havoc po did...I know smog pump not hooked up AC is gone but all hoses look in order and no glaring leaks...setup, while unattractive, is locked down airtight

Yep that's the one from Ebay, they have lots of different colors and different piping styles. Check the seller "cmpautoparts11"

This is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-RED-19...EAAOSwcF9UXxL-

Not bad for $55 - I DID have to do just a little cutting on the black rubber parts to make it fit perfect, not hard at all.

Re: Here's what I got

Here's an update...I've left it alone because its running well with 34 code. I ordered one from rock auto, a Walker that came with test slips and all. So I replace intake parts, throw maf higher up the pipe right before 90° to go into throttle body and walah....it runs like GARBAGE. I let it run for about 5 minutes and it started smoking back by distributor. I unplug maf, and it runs like a top. I'm at the end of the road with this guys...its insane
