Battery Just Dies
Battery Just Dies
Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me figure this one out please.
87 Iroc, 305, TPI, Automatic, Pretty stock - no mods - no alarm. Bought Iroc in early August.
About a month ago, after driving around the day before, go to start her up -- Nothing! Not a light, not a sound, not even a 16th of a turn. Battery was about 3 years old. So I replace it with a Heavy Duty, 4 year warranty, battery.
Just did it to me again...Nothing! Completely dead. No lights were left on, everything was off. Worked great last night - started fine.
Any ideas what could completely kill a brand new battery overnight?
Thanks guys.

Drain Pain
We are assuming you checked the battery with a meter or light bulb to make sure you simply don’t have a bad connection/cable.
Therefore if it is a drain:
Sometimes the under-hood or hatch light does not go out so check those easy ones first.
Then connect an ammeter in series with the battery.
If there is more than 50 milliamps there is excessive draw.
(You can use a small bulb such as a side marker bulb if you don’t have an ammeter.)
Disconnect the alternator wires to see if IT’S the problem.
With everything turned off and doors closed observe the current flow.
Pull the fuses one at a time, including the pump fuse near the battery, till you see the current drop.
That’s the circuit with the problem.
