i'm getting a tilt column and it has delay wipers currently my car doesn't what else do i need besides the new motor? Please, any info will be appreciated

 

That should be all you need.
Hopefully your new column is from an 82-83 or you'll need to do some rewiring at the connector near the column for the wipers to work at all. As well, the new motor will have to be from an 82-83, as the 84-newer units won't bolt to the firewall.

Pete, could you elaborate a bit on what sort of changes I'll have to make to get a later column to work with an 83 Trans Am?

 

It's basically just switching around the wires in one of the connectors for the wipers, nothing really major. I found this out when I swapped the column from my 84 Z into the 83 SC. I can look tomorrow and post up which ones need to be switched...I had them written down somewhere, but damned if I can find them now.
I had also figured out what ones needed changed in order to put an 82-83 column into an 84-newer car; likewise those are hiding on me....

I NEED to know this as well, I have an 87 column and have yet to get the '83 wiper motor going

 

Here's how the wires need to match up...unfortunately, I forget which connector I switched them around on. You should be able to easily tell when you compare the two.

84-newer column into 82-83 body
First column is those on the body, second column are the ones from the steering column.
Body Column
Black - <font color="white">White</font>
Purple - Grey
Grey - Green
Green - Purple
Pink - Pink

82-83 column into 84-newer body
First column is those on the body, second column are the ones from the steering column.
Body Column
Pink - Pink
Green - Black
<font color="white">White</font> - Grey
Grey - Purple

One thing to note about the 82-83 column into 84-newer body is that the wipers will only run on low speed; the only way I could find for them to run on high speed was to hook up a switch to provide 12V to the purple wire on the body, and switch it on when the wipers were running at low speed.

Just thought I'd say thanks pete, you saved me a bundle.

In my case I grounded the white wire on the column. I took the white wire from the fuse block and ran it through the firewall to
the white wire on my '83 motor (which is actually black/wht due to someone elses custom wiring).

Why that solution wasn't obvious to me:

87 drivetrain, steering column and wiring harness from the tailights to just before where the headlight modual used to be (another fun problem) in my '83.

Rewired like pete said, the 83 motor only operates slowly with the 87 switch on high. It does not park permanenetly. It parks for a second between low and high. Wash works. Motor ONLY operates with switch in high. one click when switch is put in delay or low.

So I grounded the green wire on the motor. Now it parks and operates in delay,low and high. Delay and High appear to the same, very slightly faster than low.

What do you guys think, Who was the casualty of my trial and error process? The motor or the switch (oh *** please no)?

Wait, I guess before I finalize the wiring I could hook up my '87 wiper motor and see if it all works.

Thanks again pete, a few more days and I would have been paying someone to remanufacture my 87 wiper motor to fit my 83 firewall.
