Cluster acting up, sometimes.

My speedo works intermittently. Sometimes the tachometer does , too, but only when the speedo cuts out. Both have been known to cut out when I hit a pothole. Both go crazy when I tap the cluster with my finger. The cluster has been replaced with a rebuilt unit, with only 1,742 miles on the replacement. The old cluster's speedo cut out, when I tried to reset the the trip mileage, which broke.

Problem with high beams, too; they work intermittently.

Bad plug behind cluster? A short somewhere? Broken circuit on back panel of cluster? Bad cluster? (Hope not; they're expensive.)

Re: Cluster acting up, sometimes.

Sounds like you have a bad ground wire somewhere in the system.

My guess, too. But an auto electrician just checked the wiring. There were grounds and bad splices. Maybe he missed one.

Re: Cluster acting up, sometimes.

Under what circumstances do the high beams not work right?
And how was it rebuilt? Was the circuit panel ( the plastic thing ) on the back repaired? Can't imagine it could be replaced
I have e good working one I tested in my own car if you end up needing another one

Kind of you to offer. and, yes, replacement circuit panels are available.

It seems to be random. May be related to problem I'm having with the speedo & tach, which cut in and out at random, too. Sounds like a bad ground. Could they all be on the same circuit? I've been told there can be 13 things downwire on some of these circuits, but I can't read wring diagrams: English major.

There's something going on with the ECM, too. Trouble light goes on after cold start, but if ignition is turned off for 10 seconds and restarted, trouble light goes out. It's as if the ECM is looking for a circuit that isn't there.

Wow, kinda spooky. I'm not that great at tracking down electrical demons like yours either. Good luck with it

Re: Cluster acting up, sometimes.

Turned out to be bad turn signal switch AND bad instrument cluster AND bad speed sensor.

Re: Cluster acting up, sometimes.

on mine it turned out to be that I just didn't align the cluster back properly. some screws where tightened down before the others and it wasn't making contact properly.
