Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
I am doing a T56 conversion on my 86 Trans Am which was originally automatic. My question is that when I was installing my manual pedals I noticed a pigtail with a heavy yellow and purple wires under the dash not plugged into anything? Is my car wired for manual NSS also and can I wire my NSS from that plug? From what I have read on other conversions is everyone splices into the wiring from the shifter. I just thought it would be easier and a cleaner install using that plug? Any feedback would really be appreciated!
Thank you

Re: Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
Why is the wire gauge on my car for the NSS a lot heavier than the plug that came with my 4th gen pedals for the NSS? Just want to make sure because I don't want a fire.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
Probably because the 4th gen solenoid doesn't draw as much current as our old Stone Age thing, and all that expensive copper isn't needed anymore.

I'm sure it draws current like it draws money out of my wallet...lol! So do you think those small wires should be fine or should I try and take apart that plug and soldier them to the connectors?
Re: Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
Just FWIW, not all auto cars are wired for the NSS at the clutch pedal. For example, in 1991, TBI cars are, V6 and TPI V8 cars aren't.
Just so no one reads this thread and goes tearing apart their car looking for something that usually isn't there...

Re: Neutral Safety Switch Wiring
as I recall the fourth gen (at least V6) wiring diagram showed the NSS energizing a relay that also tied in anti-theft. I did the swap with a set of 4th gen pedals and the NSS wiring was like 22-24 small.
I installed a relay that the switch energized. simple enough.

Thanks nag, for your advise! I had my brother who is a Avionics Electrical Technician take a look and he said it would be a good idea to add a relay. So he installed it for me, all good!
