I'm running the Dakota Digital VHX in my 1986 Camaro IROC-Z28. Looks fantastic. Easy install, and with the OBD-II module and 5 expansion modules I have access to all the info the ECM can report (tach, oil pressure, coolant temp, intake temp, outdoor temp, battery voltage, etc.) and added transmission temp and pressure, fuel pressure, engine oil temp, and compass. All the modules fit nicely between the defrost vents under the dash along with the Dakota Digital Cruise Control module.

Note pull up circuits for speed output to the cruise control (12 volts) and speed sensor input (5 volts). If you have trouble getting a speed reading at low speed or at all, check the voltage of the signal. The control box won't "see" it unless it's over about 4.5 volts. My TCU was sending a signal that was lower than that below about 45 mph, so I added the resistor between that terminal and the 5 volt source for SPD +, problem solved. Cruise control wants a 12 volt signal hence the resistor between SPD OUT and ACC POWER.

 

Wow, looks great. I will probably only get the single DLC module some my oil pressure is not seen by PCM.

My ECM is an E38 from the 2007 Corvette Z06 my LS7 came from, so all the sensors feed into it. If yours don't, they can be wired directly to the Control Box. You can add sensors that don't connect directly to the control box by buying the sensors and expansion units. They just daisy chain together and ultimately plug into the control box hence the pile of green and red wires. There are actually 5 expansion units underneath that mess. Pretty easy to wire if you follow the instructions.

The two displays are controlled by intermittent switches you can barely see in the lower left corner of the photo with the control box. The buttons stick down through the underside of the dashboard, and are easy to access by touch, but hidden unless you lay on the floor. You just press the one on the left to change the item displayed on the left screen and the button on the right to change what is displayed on the right screen. During setup you can tell it which screen to display each item (left, right, both or none). Odometer is programmable too within the first 100 miles, so you can retain your original odometer reading. I've replaced most of my car with new parts, so I'm just going to start over at 0 on mine.

The critical things like temperatures and pressures also have programmable low and high readings. When those are exceeded they automatically appear in the left screen so you know something is wrong.

for the tach, it really just gets the tach wire from the pcm?


I contacted them about getting the tremec t56 speedo adapter also

 

Depends on your setup. If you are connecting to the OBD-II port it will get it that way, otherwise if your ECM outputs it, it can get it from there. If neither of those, you will have to get it from the ignition system.

I think the only think I didn't get from the OBD was the speed and some additional sensors I added.

 

The question that I have is will it pick up the coolant temp and tach and display them on the gauges or the lcd displays? If I only do the DLC way

 

DLC way? It will display most things that have a gauge on the lcd's too if you set it up that way. You can choose what you want to display on the lcd's and on which lcd. Anything your ecm sends to the OBD will also be displayed on the instrument cluster, so if you have a sensor and it connects to the ecm, you are probably set.

I'm working on the fuel sender wiring now. Anybody remember how they did theirs?

 

If I recall correctly I just found the wire from the fuel sender to the stock cluster, tapped it and ran it to the Fuel Send terminal on the control unit. Don't need Fuel + or Fuel - unless you are completely rewiring the sender.

 

I have bought a DD dash for my '92. I haven't started the install yet but it will be within a few days. I am running full stock as far as the electrical goes meaning stock ECU as well. I have just gotten my factory service manual and have been reading through the schematics to get familiar with the car and manual so I am less panicky during the install. I get paranoid if I don't know the big picture during electrical work. I still don't have a place in mind for the control box, anybody have a good suggestion on where to stick it (be nice here)? Thanks for any help.

 

Far left upper corner of firewall is where mine is going. There is almost a perfect spot for it.

 

I put mine under the dashboard. There is plenty of room for it under there.
