LED Lighting (Problems And Solutions)

Hello everyone! I had recently run into an issue with doing LED lighting in my car and thankfully I've figured out some issues that I've had and I'm sure many others have had as well or maybe don't even realize they have these issues! So here I'll be talking about a couple issues and the easiest way to fix them and where I got the stuff to do so. If anyone has any questions for me specifically feel free to message me and I will help the best I can, but as for now I'll try to explain the function of things and how to fix the issues.

Dash LEDs - So far with LEDs for the dash the best thing I can recommend is getting dimmable ones, other than that its pretty straight forward on putting them in just make sure you have them put in the correct way as LEDs are polarity sensitive. This meaning they function one way but not the other, you must have positive and negative in the correct orientation.

Tail Lights - This is more of a preference thing but I do highly recommend getting colored LEDs for whichever socket you're putting the bulbs in to give the lenses a little bit more of a clean look to them. I've found using white LEDs (except were needed specifically) often distort the color of the lenses for things such as the brake lights or the turn signals, so I do recommend going with colored bulbs. You may find an issue with some LEDs as they don't quite fit in the sockets, so for that I recommend Sylvania bulbs as they fit nicely and have a good brightness and color to them.

Side Markers - For this I will be only talking about the front side markers in the fenders as it pertains to both Camaros and Firebirds in a very specific way and this is the most challenging one to explain. The front side markers have a dual function to them, they function both as running lights / marker lights, and turn signals. In a basic explanation they use a 194 socket with dual inputs, one wire is the 12v input for the running lights and the other is the 12v input for the turn signals. With normal incandescent bulbs this works because incandescent bulbs don't care which side the power comes from, and the system itself uses each wire as a back-feed through to create a ground to complete the electrical circuit so to bulb lights up. This is an issue with LEDs as LEDs as I mentioned are polarity sensitive, so you must have the positive (power side) and negative (ground side) in the correct position for the LED to properly function. With that all being said if you put a normal LED in the socket, it might function as a turn signal but it will not function as a running light, or just the opposite depending on how you have the bulb positioned in the socket. This issue is solved with what is called a non polarity sensitive LED. Basically the LED has a microchip built into it with a program on it that controls the function of the light to allow for dual input (like a normal bulb). So far I've only found one set of non polarity LEDs and I will share that with you here. But do note that this does not effect the rear side markers (in the quarter panel for birds or in the corner wedge of the tail light for camaros) as those are not used as turn signals but they are only used as running lights. With all of that said the bulbs I used for the front side markers are LasFit Non Polarity 194 I will post the link here as well, if the link ever quits working someone please let me know and I will add in another working link.

Interior Lighting - Interior lighting is thankfully simple just find the correct compatible LED for whichever you're trying to replace in the color that you want and just about any one will work

Turn Signal Function Issues - After changing to all LEDs most people will notice a change in the flashing speed of the turn signals, this is because of the less resistance caused by the LEDs. This is solved by replacing BOTH, yes Both, flashers with electronically adjustable ones. There are TWO flashers, one for turn signals and one for hazard lights. Here is the link to the one I had used.

I hope this helps and if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask, even if it doesn't deal with lighting I should be able to help you just message me!

Front Markers/ Turn Signals - With a correct 2057 LED there should be no issues other than the turn signals flashing a bit faster. Again I recommend getting colored LEDs, and to fix the issue of flashing a bit faster if you wish that goes back to the eletronic flasher I posted above, again don't forget to replace both flashers!

Re: LED Lighting (Problems And Solutions)

Thanks for you help. I posted in my thread but I went back to 2357 incandescent bulbs and polarity sensitive LEDs in the side markers and works like a charm.

Re: LED Lighting (Problems And Solutions)

Ive been eyeballing these, but my homemade version of them are still working fine. As are my front marker version of them as well, but i cant find the LED panels to make a spare set. Hence the ebay items.
