Help with relay

Can anyone tell me what this relay is for? There's a couple of wires that have been chewed on and I'm trying to see what they are for. The one wire is brown with white stripe and the other one is black. My car is a 83 Z28 H.O with the 5 speed. Thank you for your time!

Re: Help with relay

Wish I could remember which relay is which in my 83 L69 T-5 car... butt you know what I heard that They say: your memory is the 2nd thing you're supposed to lose as you get old, I just can't remember what the 1st one was...

Anyway, post the colors of all the wires, and we can more probably tell you. Although, the next one is the MAP sensor and the one nearest the fender, not in that pic, is the fan relay, if I can trust my last 2 brain cells (that I'm busy killing right now).

Here are a couple of pictures of the relays. I'm trying to figure out which one is for the cooling fan.

Re: Help with relay

Is the 83 HO a carb or cross fire injection car? when you untwist those two wires what doesn't work?

Re: Help with relay

The Electric Cooling Fan will have a Fusible-Link going into the Connector.

I do not think I see a Fusible-Link in the Image.

Any Relays on the Radiator Support side?

My car is carbed. The relay for the cooling fan is the middle one. But when I twist the two black wires together sometimes the car won't start. It just turns over.

There are no relays next to the radiator. If I jumper the red and black wires in the relay harness the fan will come on.

Re: Help with relay

I got it all figured out! The relay that I had bought was defective. I replaced it and the A/C fuse under the dash and everything is working the way it should. Fan comes on at about 225/230 on it's own. Fan also comes on when the A/C is switched on. Now to tackle all of the other things that needs to be done.

Re: Help with relay

If you have any issues with that style Relay or Connector in the future...
Here are the Parts that GM used as an Update:

Sealed style Metri-Pack 630/ 280 Relay.

Now discontinued by GM, but available in the Aftermarket: Standard Motors part #RY109.

The corresponding Pigtail.

Still available from GM: ACDelco part #PT1115.

RockAuto.com usually has good prices on these...
Also there are usually Discount Codes Posted in the "Aftermarket Vendor Review" Sub-Forum.
