Power button for radio

My radio works fine but always stays on when key is on and the power button has no effect. Based on research here this appears to be a common problem but no real specifics on how to repair. I assume I find a donor unit to steal a button from?

For the cost of another usable unit you could send yours off to have it repaired? I had a factory cassette deck repaired and had a AUX cable installed for a very reasonable price.

Do you have a repair service recommendation?

A fellow named Anthony Barlos that goes by Barlosal, I don't know/don't think he's a member here, I came across him searching online for someone to repair and upgrade my factory unit, he came highly recommended from some of the G-Body forums if I remember correctly. Don't take my word for it search online for his name. He was pretty quick also, he had mine done in 2 days ready to be shipped back to me repaired and with a 4 foot long AUX cable which I ran into my center console.

Re: Power button for radio

Thanks guys, very helpful.

I did find out I may have some other problems with this radio unit. The right rear channels is not working (right front works fine). I checked the speaker (10 ohm by the way) and it works fine so it is ether the head unit or the wires to the speaker. Also the radio reception could be better.

The Cassette player itself seems to work fine (not counting the right rear channel).

I found this site which is very helpful:

As one of my other hobbies is restoring old audio equipment I might start by taking a look inside. Maybe this is something I can fix myself. Granted it might be smart to pay someone else that has already screwed up enough to learn how to do it right?

Re: Power button for radio

I'm sure I can help out,........ A bad power button is pretty common and the dead speaker channel is almost certainly a capacitor problem. I might be able to supply you with a restored 'core' for about the same cost as getting the original radio repaired ---> depending on the radio you've got. Can you post a pic of your radio ?? What year is your ride ?? Want an AUX connection ? Maybe bluetooth ?

I pulled my deck today to check things out. It is exceptionally clean inside and out. No sign of any leaking caps etc. I realized the power switch was hot wired on. I re-soldered it correctly and thinking this probably means the switch does not work but was surprised it works fine. Hmmm?

The tuner did not work that well and realized the antenna cable was not well connected. Channels come in much stronger now.

Still don’t have the right rear speaker working so probably look into that further. If I can’t figure it out I will reach out to you on giving it some attention.

Re: Power button for radio

The speakers issue will almost certainly be the Capacitors,..... if you replace the Caps and the channel still doesn't work,.. it's probably an AMP chip. This is what I mean by a restored core,...... just re-use your original faceplate ( and cassette mech too maybe ) to help keep replacement costs down,... + your only paying to ship 1-way. Pretty sure I've got "rebuilt" ( meaning all repairs + new Caps ) and "restored" ( meaning all repairs EXCEPT for new Caps ) available depending on the type of radio you have/need.

I can also add a corded AUX or Bluetooth ( to most radios ).

Re: Power button for radio

I ended up getting a rebuilt deck from John and it works great! Also has an aux jack for my iPod. My IROC is a rockin!
