Power issues

My car is having electrical issues. The battery reads over 12 volts on a meter but on the dash it's down in the red and when I turn the key it doesn't start and the temperature gauge goes from below 100 to pined at 260 and the car doesn't start. If I try to start it a few times it sometimes starts. What is going on? Picture are key turned, ignition on and ignition off

When? What's going on at the time?

Same question.

Bummer... I'm guessing that besides not starting, it doesn't even crank?

Good. It's working. That's what it's supposed to do.

What is the battery voltage WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP? That is, have your assistant try to start the car while you read the meter, and read the voltage WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP. Not while it's sitting there doing nothing; WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP.

Then once it starts, what's the voltage (a) across the batt terminals, (b) between the alt case and the stud on the alternator with the Big Red Wire on it, (c) between the alt case and the neg batt terminal, and (d) between the Big Red Wire stud and the pos batt terminal?
