Someone Please help my car won't shut off!!

My ignition key is stuck in the "on" position. Yesterday I put a dead battery in my car to test it (wasn't sure if it was dead or not)...so we put jumper cables onto the battery and we tried to start it, it wouldn't start but i was getting power, enough power to get the key turned forward to try and start it...well when we decided it wasn't going to work my friend took the cables off before i had a chance to turn the key back to the "off" position...and ever since then my car will turn on and run fine but once it is running i can't turn the key back to shut the car off! i have to stall it by closing the carburetor...if anyone has any idea at all what might be going on please help me i'm stumped! thank you

had that problem a few years ago, forced me to change the ignition....I could shut it off, but the key was stuck in the tumblers. Good luck

What does either having or not having power have to do with the key switch? That sounds purely coincidental. It is most likely as zerobalance said and you are going to have to change out the ignition keyswitch.

it dosent really sound like the ignition tumbler itself, more like the switch, down on the bottom of the column.
