Starter burned my relay up
Starter burned my relay up
hello fellow, 3rd gent’s, I replace the starter on my 92 Z 28 Camaro, when I turn the key lights on the dash come on, but when I turn it to start it, nothing happens, the relay underneath the dash for the ignition keeps getting fried, i made sure all the wires were connected properly to the starter and i tested it with the a test light, it’s getting power. is there a ground that i am missing somewhere that could be loose????????

I don't know what "burned my relay up" means, or "keeps getting fried". Is there some specific failure mode that you found? Be specific, please. Different symptoms can point to different root causes, and well written statements helps people to help you.

Both starter Circuits (the Motor and the Solenoid) us the Engine Cylinder-Block as a Ground (nothing else Grounds these Circuits).
This is the main Reason that your Battery Main Ground Connection should be directly to the Cylinder-Block, and NOT a Head!
Ignition Coil Grounding needs to take this into consideration.
The Ignition Circuit has nothing to do with the Starter Motor.
The Starter Motor Solenoid Enable Circuit does pass through the Late Design VATS Relay in 1992 Models...
Is this the Relay that is going bad?

Re: Starter burned my relay up
Sounds like somehow somebody somewhen somewhere somewhy arranged your car's wiring such that the starter motor current (250 amps, more or less) tries to go through the relay, instead of the solenoid current (25 amps, more or less). Fundamental incompatibility.
Completely impossible with the stock wiring. Something has been "improved". Evidently, not for the better, as far as The Electrons are concerned.
EXACTLY how is your car wired? What did Skillet get his dykes across? Show us some photos of the wiring around the starter. Don't keep us guessing, there's NO TELLING whether we'd EVER be able to GUESS what level of sodomy has been visited upon your poor helpless unsuspecting car, based on your complaint.

You really were describing it well the first time! LOL!Follow after what Sofa said. He's taking you down a good path of investigation.
Other possibility is your solenoid switch wire (Purple) is shorted to ground somewhere after the relay.

Something Aftermarket (like an Alarm or Remote Start System) may be spliced into that Circuit and drawing more Amperage than intended.
Or there is a Short due to an exposed Conductive component.
If you have a Multimeter, you can start at the Ignition Switch and trace the Circuit through the Relay, Neutral Safety Switch, C100, and to the Starter Motor Solenoid.
Inspect the Wires...
Disconnect different segments, and measure the Resistance across them.

Sounds like you have the purple wire in the wrong spot. Like it's grounded.
a picture of your setup would help.

Re: Starter burned my relay up
Why is it I get the idea that the purple wire is pinched between the starter & block...
Why was the starter replaced? Is the same solenoid in use, or a new one also?
RBob.

Re: Starter burned my relay up
When that happens, I usually see the very next connector "InLine" Melt...
That would be the NSS Connector (Purple and Green Wires), and then the VAT System Relay Connector (Green and Yellow Wires).
