Car doesn't crank and wires questions

Hi!

I bought a barn 3gen one month ago and i have some issue with it:

I've changed the starter and battery and the car would not crank at all.
When i turn the key, everything stops and the brake and "infl" lights turn on.
I have some power and ground to the starter and the soleoid is receiving the 12v signal from the starter relay...

And secondly, i have some wires not connected to anything, do you have any idea if it's suppose to be something there or not?

Thx by advance!!

Re: Car doesn't crank and wires questions

Check which terminal of the solenoid you have the purple wire connected to. Should go to the one closer to the block; labelled "S" in a way/place that's very hard to see. if you have it hooked to the one farther out, labelled "R", it won't do anything. That terminal was involved in the old points type ignitions, to bypass the ballast resistor when starting. No longer used since the intro of electronic ignitions in 74/75. It's still there so that the one solenoid will work in any car way back into the 50s or maybe before.

You evidently have an auto car. The plug with the yellow & purple wires would go to the clutch safety switch in a stick car. It's just extra in an auto car.

The other connector, with about 12 cavities but only about 4 or 5 have anything in them, is the OBD1 diagnostic connector.

Looks like you might be missing the hazard flasher.

Re: Car doesn't crank and wires questions

Hi,

Thanks for your response!
The starter is correctly connected.

Just checked for shorts in the wiring:
i did disconect some fuses: 11 - 17 - 18 -22
So the vats light is out, radio, fogs and some interior contacts.
As well as the alternator.

Do these may prevent the starter to crank?
If yes, i need to change all the bad parts to try again?

If there's 12V on the solenoid terminal but it doesn't operate, then it's bad. New or not.

No, pulling fuses won't change that.

Ok so, benchtested the starter and it works...
the issue was that i connected the solenoid input to the wrong pin...
On the photo, the correct one is the right one without any nuts...

what the left one is used for? Why is it the only one with nuts

Re: Car doesn't crank and wires questions

I had a 1972 Buick GS. We removed the engine to replace the rear main seal. Reinstalled the engine & had same problem as this thread's author. Wire in wrong place on solenoid.

what the left one is used for?
This; I'll quote myself instead of re-typing.

the one farther out, labelled "R", ... was involved in the old points type ignitions, to bypass the ballast resistor when starting. No longer used since the intro of electronic ignitions in 74/75. It's still there so that the one solenoid will work in any car way back into the 50s or maybe before.
Why is it the only one with nuts
Because someone put the nut on there, and in fact someone put it back after removing the wire that wasn't supposed to go there, and no one put any nuts on the other. Looks in fact like the 2 nuts on the "R" terminal, both the one that's part of the solenoid to hold the stud in it and also the one that's for clamping onto a wire, have both been taken off and then put back on in the opposite order.
