Alternator Question

I know that alternators have different amp outputs, and my question is what is the highest you can put in a Camaro? I know that the stock ones are usally around 100 (105 i think exactly), and that the police ones are 140amps, so if i got a 140 amp and put it in my car would it blow anything or just work normally but with higher amperage?

Thanks for any help,

Joker

No its fine, normally high output ones are put on cars with lots of accessories that put a load on the charging cct (output of alternator to the battery) like the a/c compressor clutch, feul injection systems, high torque starter motors etc.

The alternator will only put out as much current as your car wants, but always regulates the voltage around 12 or 13.5Volts.

A higher output alternater maintains a good battery charge while all the accessories are working putting a load on the current output of the alternator and rpm of the engine, wheras your standard alt may not get enough charge back into the battery.

If your current one aint broke leave it be.

Thanks... that is what i though with the output going through the battery and all. My current alternator is starting to go (i have a new battery, but i notice that at low RPM's the voltage is seriously dropping down to the first hash mark on the guage). I'm was thinking of getting a new alt, and with the stero sytem i have in my car i was thinking of getting an alt with a bit more charging power to accomidate it while still using such amp sucking things like the heater blower in the wintery months, and a/c in the summer.

Mine does the same thing, especially at night.
I can't even run my fog lights at night without the voltage going to 8 volts( I don't even have my stereo running right now either). I've got an Optima Red Top in my trunk.

You can install smaller alternator pulley
( faster turn on idle run ) or
generally upgrade alternator ....
look for e.g on www.alternatorparts.com
they have all what You need : )

Now I have 140A Ice Berg alternator

I work at AutoZone and I've looked for a couple of days trying to find what the 140amp alternator came on. I have yet to find it. Can anyone tell me where to look at? I've looked on the 91 & 92 Z28s but it never came up asking me if it was a B4C or not.

I did find a 124amp alt on the taxi & police Caprices.

i had same problem running stock alternator with underdrive pulleys, so i found the smallest pulley i could from march and put it on the stock alt...no big difference...i solved it this way.call powermaster..they make high output alts..solved my problem.theyll even answer your questions.........

A very good question about alt. output. Looked at posting and did not see what year car yours is. If you have the newer CS type you can purchase new or rebuild. My bearing(rear) has been singing off and on and I finally got around to rebuilding it this week. Suggest you go to www.alternatorparts.com, they have rebuilding kits and complete units to 170 amps. at very competitive prices. I used on of thier Iceberg kits and was pleasantly surprised. They have a larger heatsink on the rear to keep it cooler. The BIGGEST concern one should have about alt. life is the cindition of the battery. If you run with a marginal battery these units will cook fairly fast. Also, as a point of interest remember if you go to a 140, or 170 amp alternator your charging output at low RPM will be LESS that the stock 105 amp unit. Also make sure major current junctions are clean and tight. Danno

and, finally-dont judge alt. output by the dash mounted gauge-notoriously inaccurate, especially as mileage accumulates. measure directly off the battery. check that the wire gauge is sized up as well when increasing alt. current flow-the main charge wire off the rear of the alt. usually a 10 ga.is there. above 100a 8 ga. is a better choice.
