i never heard of people having to buy retainers for these springs there nothing special just a single valve spring design my friend bought them for his 305 tbi and never got to putting them in but he didnt by retainers for them. In the jegs book it says 981's are good for .490 could be a error though theres alot in that book.

Re: brand new comp valve springs
I have a set of 981-16 springs they are on my 305 TBI heads running .500/.510 lift no problem you do need special retainers and you have to cut the seats. If they are the same springs? And by the way you cant get valve seals to stay in there on these heads Thats how close the retainer gets to the heads. Thought it would leak alot of oil, but not really. My two cents.
