ZZ4 Cam

Judging interrest in my stock ZZ4 cam. 3000 miles on it with no problems. 474/510 with 1.5 rockers. Going with a bigger comp. Will be removing in the next few weeks.

Re: ZZ4 Cam

Hey I've been looking for a ZZ4 cam for a while now, just wondering what your honest opinion is if you could scale the wear on the cam 1 being the worst and 10 being the least amount of wear, also you will be selling the lifters with the installation spider? if you are getting rid of your rockers I'd be interested in those as well. I live in Michigan so I would have pay to get them shipped. If the cam is in decent shape ( pictures would be nice!)and you are selling the lifters and spider I'll make you an offer.
Thanks.
you can give me a call around noon today or tomorrow at 586-339-7697

Re: ZZ4 Cam

Well the motor only has 3000 miles on it, and never been to the strip. It should be pretty close to perfect. I'm keeping the lifters and reusing them for the new cam so they are not available. I'm also selling the heads off the car(package) so if I dont have interrest in them, I will separate the rockers(stock 1.5 SA) and they will be available. It will be a couple weeks before the cam comes out so I cant give a pic yet. The car runs great, just looking for a bit more power. Does your dist. have a steel gear?

Re: ZZ4 Cam

I'm no expert but I had a professional engine builder that I work with one and he told me that a cam and lifters cannot be separated, in other words a new cam always needs new lifters, and a used cam always needs the used lifters, because the wear patterns on the cam will not match the new lifters, and vice-a-versa. I am also pretty sure that no one will buy this cam without the lifters bagged and tagged with the appropriate identification e.g. (Right cylinder head, Cylinder 5, Exhaust Valve) I am sure that there is a thread on one of the forums here that will explain this better than I can. But I will not be purchasing a used cam, no matter what, without its lifters, properly marked.
Thanks
I'd still be interested in your rockers unless they are roller rockers.

Re: ZZ4 Cam

What he told you is correct for a non roller cam. With the roller cams you dont need to replace the lifters for the wear pattern because of the roller tips. Is the engine your wanting this in a roller or will you be doing a retro fit on a non roller block? If still in question about this look at the various posts for the hot cam kit GM sells. Comes with everything needed for the swap(cam, roller rockers, springs and retainers), thus retaining the original roller lifters with the new cam. If still in question you could give comp cams a call and they'll tell you you can use the original lifters as well. While at the Gatornations this year I talked to the Comp Cam guys and they suggested new lifters with a new cam swap only if there were a lot of miles on the engine or you were going with a rediculous size cam. The factory lifters can be purchased through a GM parts house very reasonably but if your roller lifters don't have many miles on them you are able to use them doing a hydraulic roller cam swap. I will be reusing my stock roller lifters with the new cam.

As for the rockers, they are not rollers just stock Self Aligning 1.5's.

This is true, but only for flat tappet cams. Roller cams are different, and can use new lifters or old lifters. In fact, just take a look at the Hot cam. In the description it says REUSE stock lifters. The zz4 cam is in fact a roller cam i believe so there would be no problem sticking a new set of ls7 lifters with it.

Re: ZZ4 Cam

WOW...
I am just gonna eat my humble pie...
I talked to the guy afterwards and HE ALSO told me that roller lifters can be reused...

So I guess I am still interested in the cam and rockers then...

I'll give you 170 for the cam and 20 for the rockers.

Re: ZZ4 Cam

Going to be a couple of weeks before I pull everything out, little hectic right now at work. As for the heads, I'm not really sure yet. Either the AFR 195's(1038) or the Trick Flow super 23's with the 64 cnc combustion chamber. Trick Flows are a bit cheaper so I'll probably go with them. Going to run a cam in the 230-240 dur, so I'm looking for a bigger converter if anyone has one.

Wildbird, I have the TFS 23's. They look great, I would say go with the cheap spring version and then upgrade the springs. I don't know how great the tfs springs are. I'll keep you updated as I put the motor in the car and get it dialed in if you want. Also if you do go with the TFS heads, stick with a cam in the .500 lift area. That is where the heads absolutley thrive, they flow about 250 and at .600 only flow 1cfm better.

Re: ZZ4 Cam

I've got a friend with a torque converter for a TH-350 with a 3,000 RPM stall. I don't think it will work in a 700r4 though. Let me know if this helps.

Try craigslist!...

Re: ZZ4 Cam

Our local craigslist doesn't really have anything like what I'm looking for. As for the TH 350 converter, it wont work for me. I'm staying with the 700 for now, Figure the wife will probably kill me when she finds out how much I'm spending already.

89corvette, thanks for the info. Which heads do you have(62, 64, 72). The cam I'm looking at is a 568 lift comp. I figured if I went with the biggest springs they are good to 600 lift. Are they not gooD? Thought about the 62cc chambers with the non cnc but for just a bit more...... If I would have to change the springs, I'd just be better off going with the AFR's. Saw the post for the Pro Comps on here. I just dont know anything about them so I figure I'll go with a name brand.
