GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

I have a new product for you die-hard GM fans that refuse to put a Chrysler part on your car. I have done some research and testing and now have available a GM steering shaft upgrade. In addition to being a GM part they also have a set screw you tighten after installation to eliminate all shaft movement, they have a metal bushing instead of the worn out mostly broken plastic bushing on the inner shaft and for those of you with large tube headers the shaft is the opposite of the Jeep shaft so the small end attaches to the steering column allowing the most available clearance.

This is the end that attaches to the steering column:

This is the steering box end, note how nice the u-joint is:

Size: 1.30 MB

Set screw in the center:

Size: 1.43 MB

Metal bushing in lieu of plastic:

Size: 1.33 MB

As with everything i sell these will be prepped, painted, greased and ready to install.
These GM units will be $70 shipped to the lower 48.

I only have 2 of these in stock so hurry.
PM me if your interested, please title it GM Shaft.

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

Minor point, but I think the steering shaft is a Saginaw part, rather than being specific to any brand of car.

MC,

Have you considered throwing in the Astro bearing as part of your package?

James,
I no longer have my 3rd Gen so the whole Astro bearing & shaft was new to me. Now i have done some more research i will check into it. I need to see how hard the bearing is to pull and what tools i need. If it doesn't add too much time i may start doing that. I found a place that has 25 jeeps and 15 astro vans so i may be making a trip but its 2 1/2 hours each way from my house.

A clip, a cap, and the bushing. Perhaps three minutes. Check the following:

Check the first pic in post #7 of the above for a picture of the clip. Screw driver/prying instrument will do it.

Sorry both are sold.
I hope to be getting more in 2 weeks.

I do have a 1 Jeep shaft ready to ship if you would like that.

If you want to get on the waiting list for a GM shaft please send me a PM titled GM Steering Shaft. This helps me keep track on a first come first serve basis.

Thanks

If you take out the rag joint, doesn't that promote all the road virbration, and road jitter up to the steering wheel ??

For me, steering box noise seems to be amplified. That said, many upgrades are trade-offs on our cars--poly vs. rubber, for example.

Here is the type with the rubber isolator.
These are so much nicer then the Jeep Shafts in my opinion.
Please specify if you want one of this type, i can get them if there is a desire for them.

Thanks for the kudos, i try to make it easy on everyone with a flat shipped price.
Others that sell play the lower price then add shipping game. and sometimes even try to make money on the shipping cost.
I clean them up, remove the column end, re-clock it 90 degrees, press it back on and tack weld it just to make sure its not going anywhere. Then i clean the bolt threads, spread the ends & test fit on a steering column, sand & paint them gloss black. Before shipping i grease the inside of the shaft, wrap both pieces in foam and stretch wrap for shipping.

Sold out this batch already but have more on the way.
PM me to get on the list as i should have some ready to ship next weekend.

GM Shafts $70 Shipped
Jeep Shafts $60 Shipped

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

Received mine today, But not sure about rubber bushing, where does it go. Also like your sign about towing and selling for junk. Very nice looking part, will be pulling my engine soon and will give you good pics of install in a few weeks.

I assume your talking about the bearing, it goes in the end of your steering column to replace the plastic one that came from the factory.

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

Got it swapped in this afternoon. Hardest part was wrestling the stock shaft out between the brake hard lines. I ended up buzzing part of the plastic cover off the stock one with my dremel to give me some more room.

I also had to grind a small amount of material off of the top of the column end to give the new bolt some room where it passes through the collar. I snapped a few crappy pics with my phone.

I probably won't be driving the car for another few months since there is salt on the roads. Looking forward to getting it back on the road in the spring.

Awesome, thanks for the pics.
I guess I should post the installation instructions from the Jeep shaft in this thread.

Bearings left.

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

These are the instructions from my Jeep Shaft thread, figured i would post it here also.

I have had many questions about the notching of the shaft so i thought some more instruction may be in order.
The notch required for the bolt has to be made on your steering column shaft NOT the Jeep Shaft.
To make things easier i used an extra steering column for the pictures. The area you are seeing is the part of the steering column that comes thru the firewall.
This is what it looks like once you remove your stock shaft.

Slide the Jeep shaft on as shown.

If you look thru the bolt hole you can see where the column shaft sticks out into the opening.

Mark the center of the bolt hole with a marker.

I got carried away with my die grinder so the notch is larger then it needs to be.

Now you can see the bolt hole is clear straight thru.

Bolt installed and shaft locked in from sliding off.

Hopefully this helps.

Thanks James.

Sorry Johnny i already shipped your shaft so it would cost extra to send you the bearing if you wanted one.

Re: GM Steering Shaft Upgrade

Can you make a gm shaft with rubber isolator and bearing? And will it be a simple install ...could not align my car properly because the slp headers rub on the header and dont want to "massage" the header
