Re: wtb 400 small block

Just an FYI - The 2-bolt 400 blocks are stronger than the 4 bolts.

Re: wtb 400 small block

Replied to your pm... and i can answer your question... The thought is that the 4 bolts go straight down and all the really do is remove material from the block. Is this true.. dunno.. I am freinds with the owners of a few high performance shops around here and this debate has gone on for as long as i can remember even with the 350 blocks.. For the ultimate answer there is only 2, But a 2 bolt block and have it drilled for 4 bolt splayed main caps or call a company like world industries. I hope this ehlps a bit...

Re: wtb 400 small block

Don't turn down a four bolt main block if it comes your way. Use main studs instead of main bolts and you'll be fine. With main bolts, most of the holding clamp pressure is on the main webs. With main studs, the pressure is equally distributed between the caps and the web. If your block is going to be line honed or bored, tell your machinist that you are going to use main studs so he/she can use them in the machining process.

Re: wtb 400 small block

Also remeber that the 400 4 bolt was only made for a couple of years.. so there are far more 2 bolts out there.. both are good for moderate street power... just my .02 from experience..

Re: wtb 400 small block

I have a complete 400 SB engine that has been in storage in a garage for probably 20 years, I would consider it a core since it has sat so long. $350 complete NY zip 12538.
