Pics of Monday 383 swap

Here are some pics of my swap. Several people have been asking for pics of it so here we go!

This is the old 350 TPI and 700R4 after 106,678 miles....it still ran strong enough for high 13 second runs when I took it out.

Yessir's.......SFC's are listed in the sig......definitely needed. Pretty much the only stock parts of my suspension are the front control arms and the front sway bar brackets.....everything else has changed........all bushings even.:lala:

I'll let you know how it goes from here. I spent all morning hooking up the tranny cooler lines, speedo, shifter (and adjustments), Edelbrock torque arm, and Summit combo cooler (oil and tranny). Its lunch time now.
Hey David......sorry man.....the Air Force has me here at Sheppard. Can't exactly say that I like this place. Oh well, its only what yopu make of it. What type of info are you looking for on this swap?

Well I know how to drop the motor in I just need to know stuff like wireing and vacum lines and where they all go (Im going from MPI to carb) or any infor that you can give that I wont think of untill I droped it in or any problems your ran into.

My dad was at Sheppard from 83-86 as a crew cheif instructor, I was there last August just to look around, the cops gave us a lot of flack trying to get on base and we had to fill out all this form just to because we had to get a temporary gate pass (the thing that goes on your car windsheild) even though my dad and I both had millitary ID's. We used to live over in the enlisted housing right next to the gate over there. You can see the gate from the house so you can see where that was a bad place to live but I got some pictures of the base and all of the planes sitting out there since it was a Saturday. Its not the best base in the world but hey I was born there LOL and at least you have that garage on base that you can work on your car and they have all the tools and stuff.
My dad said the base has BARLEY changed since 83, he walked in the garage and saw a oil spot under a cabinet or something that he put there back in 83 HAHAHAHA
David
P.S. Is there a single base Air Force or Army that is nice in Texas???? HAHAHAHA

Dragula,
I have a question concerning your headers. I have heard the collector size on the SLP's is only 2.25". Is this true with yours? Do you think this will hamper your 500hp at all? Either way, I would still love to have that setup.

Dragula,
That looks nice !!!!
I have a question, are you using your stock block (2 bolts main) or a different 4 bolts block?

I don't know about the collector size.... I believe they are bigger than the Hedmans I used to have. If any things gonna hamper the exhaust, it will be the Hooker exhaust. It's only 3". I won't be running a cat so that will eliminate some more backpressure. I was going to get the Mufflex 4" setup, but they ticked me off and I had a real hard time justifying the $600 after that.

Primo......not the stock 2-bolt block. I got ahold of an old 4-bolt out of a Corvette......It had never been bored so I dropped it off and had the works done on it. It was basically race-prepped.

A Milodon high volume water pump, and a new aluminum radiator (stock replacement). It should be sufficient since the engine oil is no longer being cooled by the engine coolant, and the tranny has its own cooler also.

Since when did the oil get cooled thru the radiator? You lost me here.

I must say that engine ALMOST looks as good as mine
Dragula, i'd really love to know where you got those 500 numbers from? If you got 500, i'm sure i'm there close with ya then, and i run low 12's on BFG street radials, 11's will be easy if you can get it to hook. Once again, looks good, be sure to let us know the numbers it runs.

Well, the numbers I am coming up with are off the AFR website. They had the proven combos, one of which is similar to mine (except a have a solid roller cam), and I have done some other stuff to possibly get a little more (port matching and such).....at this time they are still estimates. At the AFR website they were showing several combos over 500/500. Go check their websites and see where you are at. I see you are running the AFR 195's....you should have a bunch of horsies too. I have comletely rebuilt my suspension to aid in the hook-up on launch so I hope to get into the 11's.....but 12's should ne easily attainable.
On my IROC there were two lines that were plumbed into the coolant, coming off of the heater hoses. The coolant fed into 2 pipes that went under the engine (the outlets are located where the mechanical fuel pump would be) and attached to a fitting that the oil filter spun onto. The coolant ran through this thing as the oil ran through and cooled it. That way the engine coolant was also colling the engine oil. Not good in my opinion since small blocks have always had cooling issues.
I think it was an option for most cars but stock on the IROC's. Anyways, I ditched it for an external oil cooler.

My oil cooler was set up the same way before I took it off. The power steering cooler is just line ran under the front of the car. It took me awhile to figure out what that was. As far as the headers, someone posted on the exhaust board that SLP's neck down to 2.25 just below the pipes, and then flare out to match the stock exhaust bolt pattern. Mufflex would be good, and I would love to get one, but the $600 seemed a little extravagant to me also.

No turbo or supercharging for awhile. I have spent enough money for now and I still need to get the body and interior finished. Besides....I would have to drop the compression some.
As for the SLP's....they flare out more at the top because of the donut type exhaust seal......I wonder if this is what your friend was referring to......they look good to me (a lot better than my old Hedmans!)!

Definitely not legal. The heads, ignition and carb will all pass, maybe the whole engine if I didn't have the RPM manifold.

I have the Milodon oil pan. They make one for 82-86 Camaros. I believe its 86 at least. Anyways, just tell them you need the one with the psgrs side dipstick and a 2-piece seal (assuming you are using a 2-piece block and crank.

Nice swap. Emissions? you don't need no stinkin' emissions.
Are you even in an e-check area I was @ Dyess for a little over 4 yrs are they didn't have emissions in Taylor Co. you need to get transfered! One thing to think about..put on some gutted cats, that way you at least look legal. Helps you to get around the tampering laws when going to a different base.

Dragula, nice setup! I was wondering with those headers, what kind of clearance do you have with your steering box rod? Mine is rubbing, so I guess I'm gonna have to somehow put a little dent in them so they don't rub a hole. Hate to have to dent $600 headers though......

Yeah....mine did that too.
I actually just tapped them a little. You don't really need to "dent" the area. Just "finesse" it a tiny bit to get just enough clearance so it doesn't rub. You can't even tell that I did it.

Ok, just curious, how? I mean, did you start it up and get it nice and hot before doing it? It seems like it would bend easier that way too. And what did you use? I don't have much for tools (since my rollaway got ripped off last year) but managed to find a 7" pry bar that I still have (it's got a flat end, sort of like a scraper)

Damn, this ma bell connection sure is slow!!

Also, sorry all for the ridiculously large picture on that header post. I took a lot of pics the other day, and had my camera on the SHQ setting, and it was too large to post here, so I had to shrink it down. No problem on shrinking the file size, but I don't know why it still turned out so big! Also, when manually shrinking a pic like that, what would be the ideal dimensions to save it to, for uploading on here.

Thanks!

Ok, nevermind!! I think I answered my own question on shrinking pics from SHQ. I am trying a test pic here now. This is my new 406 that I just got installed!

how much are you guys out there spending on your 383 stroker motors. i plan on building a 383 stroker very soon. as of right now i have $1500 saved up for it. by the end of the summer i'll have about $2200 and then what ever i make working after school. im not looking for anything to crazy. i would like to at least hit the 400hp mark. do you think i'll have enough money by the end of the summer to build a good 400+hp motor. if not, about how much would i need to build one. thanks for any info.
