Is this a good deal?

I have been looking around for a new engine and finaly decided on getting a 350 TPI. Everywhere I looked wanted to much. I finaly called Schucks and found a Long Block 350 for $1505. It comes with chrome valve covers and oil pan and an RV cam. Alls he said i would need to do is put on my original TPI setup from my 305, get a new water pump, and distributor. Does that sound about right? Do any of you think that is a good deal? It also comes with a 3 year or 36000 mile warenty.

If its a new block I guess its an ok deal. If it used chances are he's ripping you off. Unless of course it has a froged rotating assembly and expensive *** heads but I don't think that's likely. For 1600$ you can build a very nice 350 bottom end and be sure that everything in there is quality components.

most stock motors won't break 250 HP. Youll need to do some work to it after you get it to get those sort of numbers.

make sure it's a roller setup, but from what it sound slike, you're going to have to replace the cam and have some head work done or new heads installed for that much hp.....

Thanks you guys! But I acutally found a good deal getting the engine rebuilt. Im getting it bored 30 over, putting a mild cam on it, and performance parts like sparkplugs, fuel injectors, and K&N filters. I will get everything done (including towing, having them take the engine out and put back in and all parts and labor) for $2700. Im also going to put a new chip in it soon!

One thing you need to keep in mind is that you need the injectors from a 350 tpi. (22 lbs/hour)

That's the minimum injector for a 350.

Not to burst your bubble, but I wouldn't call that a good deal. Rebuilding a 305 just doesn't make sense from a $'s/hp standpoint. You could go to a dealer and have a new 350 put in place of your 305 for that amount. Or have somebody put in that Shucks engine for that much.

DON'T REBUILD YOUR 305! It's not money well-spent. I can say that even though I did a lot of work on my own 305, because I didn't do anything to the short-block itself. If it had needed rings or pistons, I would have abandoned it and gone for a 350. I'd suggest you do the same.

BTW, you don't HAVE to use 350 injectors. An adjustable fuel pressure regulator will allow you to use the stock 19 lb 305 injectors in a mild 350 (which is all it sounds like you want).

johndo1707 & five7kid :

Yes im thinking about getting my engine totally rebuilt for $2700. The thing is if i went to shucks and bought one of there engines it would cost me about 15-1600 just for the long block. Then I would have to get my fuel injectors cleaned or buy new ones, get my radiator roded out, and a few other things that would just keep adding up. After calculating everything if i went to shcuks it would cost well over $3000. I did call a dealer and they wanted $3500 for a replacement engine (350ci.) I also called another place and the said they would put in a replacement engine 305 or 350 and redo everything, plus it includes towing, and having them pull it out. They would also do a tune up and replace all needed parts (hoses, injectors, plugs, battery ect) for about $3500. Plus it comes with a five year warenty. Im thinking about going through them instead of the first place. Although i still have a few more places to call. Does anybody think that is an ok deal?

I rebuilt my 305 because of a lack of time to get it done, and a lack of money. It didn't cost $2700 though. You can save allot of cash if you rebuild it yourself.

you can save alot just by doing a swap yourself. Some of teh older two piece crate 350's are really cheap, plus i believe they use the same intake face as your present engine. I just picked one up for 1300 dollars. Throw in a cam and it will probably put out around 250 HP or so and still be quite drivable. Not a whole lot of power but enough for the average street car.

P.S. These are new engines w/ 30,000 mi/3 year warantees
