Which motor?
Hey I just came into possesion of an 84 Camaro that has no motor in it. My question is which motor would be a good motor that will provide decent amount of power along with being legal(smog, etc..) and streetable. Also I am a college student so an engine that is fairly affordable would be great. I also enjoy building cars up, so an engine that is easily upgraded would be nice. Any help you guys can give would be great. Thanks

The main emissions concerns are computer controlled induction and supporting staff such as catalytic converter, sensors, A.I.R., EGR, charcoal canister, etc. Since this car doesn't have an engine now, can we assume the carb isn't there, either? What shape is the electrical harness in?
What engine you bolt under all that stuff isn't quite as important, as long as the cam doesn't have so much duration and overlap that raw fuel is dumped out the exhaust at low engine speeds. A bunch of guys have 350s in place of the original 305 that will sail through emissions inspection and testing.
If you've got some serious coin, GM sells a hi-po 350 engine kit that will provide almost everything you need. You'd need to have a computer controlled carb and a full engine harness to do it, but the rest is there. It requires an automatic transmission as well (you didn't say anything about the presence or type of tranny in this car). Cost is about $4500 plus tax & shipping, so you're talking about a good bit of expense, but it is emissions legal and will run great when you're done. I got A 84 camaro that had a lg4(305) change it to a goodwrench 350.have change the cam to a comp 286,Edelbrock intake 3701 with the egr in it.Holly carb 600.and time goes on I can add to this engine.Good power.There is allway sombody that is faster.

another suggestion would be to check the junkyards. you might be able to find a decent replacement there, and if you found a good donor, you would be able to convert to tpi, and that would help your emissions concern, and gives you better driveability. Just my .02
