Going rates at machine shops.

I live in NJ and know of a few shops but every time I ask them for a quote they want the engine there before they say anything. I have taken out the pisons, rods, cam, crank...it is esentially bare. I would like to know how much the following will cost: Hot tanked, bored .030 over (with plate), new cam bearings, and plugs, should it be sonic tested? (did I miss anything?). I will later need to have the pistons, rods and crank balanced but I will be installing that myself (depending on how much that would cost to install. A book I read recently (1998 prices) said that the block work would cost about $500. does that sound about right?

Edit:
*I don't think you can get blocks magnafluxed*

I would say more like $350 - 400 here in PA.

When I had my LT1 done up they did .030 overbore with plate, hot tank, pressed new pistons onto rods, install frost plugs, and check deck height it cost me $305 tax ncluded. I do not know how much magnafluxing costs so I can not say.

you can get anything that's feromagnetic mag tested. here the price would be:
40 to clean
15 to install cam bearings
10 for freeze plugs
8 dollars a hole to bore hone w/plate
don't think anyone around here does UT testing, i've done my own and not sure i'd trust anyone at a machine shop to do it, it's hard to get sound in a casting and get a good signial. i know machine shops do it every day but i'd suspect how accurate they are.

If these prices are accurate it would pay me to drive to Ohio.

I found these prices at a Race shop in Patterson... he said he doesn't work with "normal" rebuilds... sounds like he is a *****...

Block strip & boil $65
Install cam bearings $32
Install oil & water plugs $20
Bore up to .030" $92
Hone 820 finish w/stress plate $125
Check align bore $40

Total $374

That doesn't sound too bad but this is assuming the block is good. The block I have was supposedly from a late 80's vette that "pissed oil out the dipstick" when a SC was added. I took the oil pan off and the oil pump had exploded. The guy took out some of the parts but chunks of the cover plate on the pump were in the pan. It is also a 2 bolt main block (I thought all vettes had 4 bolts?) Other than that it seems to be in good shape.

Vettes haven't had 4 bolt blocks since way back in the day, and the LS1 of course. You're lucky you didn't pitch a rod if the pump was broke. I hope that block cleans up at .030 over. You might want to think about splayed mains while you're in there. Just a thought.

All LT1 and LT4 vette blocks have 4 bolt mains and I dont think those are from back in the day.
