Whats wrong with 882 Heads?

I recently saw a post that said 882 heads are bad. I have 882 heads on my non-original 350, whats wrong with them? What years were they made & what motors did they come on?

They are typical terrible smog heads; one of the main ingredients in the combinations that produced 170 & 189 HP 350s in the 70s. They came on 350s and 400s, 2 and 4 barrel, all through the mid to late 70s, in every chassis that 350s came in. They used the same short block in all of them, the same cam (the "929" cam), the same exhaust, and those heads, and then just stuck either the 2-bbl or 4-bbl intake and carb on it. Yuck.

They can be made to flow fairly well with porting but end up with some very thin places that are even more prone to cracking than they already are. Plus, like ede said, they have large combustion chambers so it's difficult to build a reasonably high compression motor out of them. You have to use dome pistons which reduced both the combustion and thermal efficiencies of the finished product.

Get rid of them if you want your car to run halfway strong.
