Planning BBC swap
As does everyone, I have a couple questions concerning a BBC swap. I was planning on using either a 427 or 454.
Question 1: I will still use the car on the street, so I want an O/D tranny. I hear that the 700R4 is not good for use on a BBC, what are my options?
Question 2: Is a BBC suitable for just a nice streetable car?
Thanks in advance.

yes a bigblock can be quite streetable
although you will sacrifice in the mpg dept.
do not i mean do not put a 700r4 behind a big block
(matter of fact never use one period they are junk)
try a 4l80e if you can afford one
have you found a motor and what are you looking for?

Thanks for the reply. No I haven't found the motor yet. I was going to do serious looking once I found out if it was a good idea. By the way, how much are we talking for the 4l80e tranny?

I've been running mine for 4+ years now and love it. No overdrive (T400) and 3.73 gears doesn't make for good mpg's on the highway, but that's not why I built it

Question #2 is an easy answer, yes.
Question #1 is a little different. Your choices for OD transmissions are limited to the 4L80 and a manual. There are several OD manuals out that will hold a BBC but don't be shocked when you see the price tag, figure in the car costs of around $2k if you go with a used 4th gen T-56.

You could always use a TH350 or TH400 tranny and have a Gear Vendor OD installed on the back of it.

4L80E is essentially an electronic TH400 with an overdrive. It's an enormous transmission and likely would not fit without hassles. A gear vendors overdrive can be used behind a TH400 but don't get hard on the throttle when it's in overdrive.
A manual tranny is another option. You will be confined to some of the more expensive overdrive trannys on the market.

What do you mean, "...don't get hard on the throttle in overdrive"? Gear Vendors' biggest customer base is motorhomes, 10-ton beasts with big blocks ahead of them. You can be sure they don't heed that advice!
Another OD choice is TH200R4. Pro Built sells 'em, get a Spohn crossmember/torque arm kit, good to go. If 10-sec GN's can abuse those trannys with impunity, a BBC shouldn't hurt them, either.

while were on the subject of a 200 r4, anyone know what they can be built to take ? My friend has one sitting under his workbench just collecting dust. Id prefer torque #'s. Im looking for a cheap alternative to get a new tranny to replace my ailing 700R4. It would be nice to have a second trannyto work on while still having the car operational.

to add to this, id like to build a nice drive train to go ewith my eventual mods wile not having to disturb the car untill im ready to bold everything on. After all, this is my daily driver.
