I got my new 383....
Just finished up the deal last night on my new 383 stroker SBC! This motor will take the place of my stock 305tbi in my project 1991 RS Camaro. This is a starting point for the entire project. The motor will be the 383 stroker with 410HP (unless I port the heads and get even more HP out of her). The stock 700R4 will under go a new 3000 stall and a TCI shift kit. The rear end is being swaped out in favor of a 4th gen rear with posi and 4:10 gears to help push the f-body to the limits. Other mods will also come later (roll cage, 150 NOS, slicks, suspenion mods, etc...).
My goal is high 11's in the 1/4 mile, however where I race now is only an 8th mile track, so I have to get used to that for a few months until next summer when I move again.
The car is a bright red, RS with T-tops and red interior. I will be having a shop do the swap, as this guy that works there has done 3rd gen motor swaps (EFI to carb) a few times and knows what he is doing. All I do is pay him and start the car a week later...
I will keep updated information as if occurs.
I have listed the specs for the newly rebuilt 383 that is going in the RS:
Chevy 383 Stroker
1969 Chevy block4 Bolt main
Scat 9000 3.75 stroke
11.5-1 pistons (.030)
Hardened push rods
Rods reconditioned and shot peened
Double hump Fuelie heads polished
Stainless steel valves w/ swirl finish (2.02 intake 1.60 exhaust).550 lift valve springs
7/16 screw in studs w/ guide plates
1.5 Aluminum roller rockers
Pro Magnum hydraulic lifters
(Comp Cam) Xtreme Energy Comp camshaft - .507 lift intake, .510 lift exhaust, 284 duration intake, 296 duration exhaust
Edelbrock Elite Series valve covers (4 5/8 tall)
800 cfm Edelbrock carburetor
10” Edelbrock chrome air cleaner
K&N air filter
Chrome oil pan
Chrome fuel block off plate
Chrome alternator brackets
Chrome water neck
Chrome 95 amp one wire alternator
Stainless steel bolt kit
HEI distributorChrome fluid balancer SFI approved to 12,000 rpm
Serpintine belt and pulleys
Power Plus satin finished crosswind intake manifold, 1500-6500 rpm range, port runners & plenum chambers are isolated from the valley cover which allows free flow of air under the runners and plenum.
This motor will produce approx. 425 hp.

Yes, not with only 410HP, but if you read again, I am adding a 150 shot of NOS on top of that, total of around 560HP!
That will see 11's for sure....

BYE BYE REAR! Save your money and get a high preformance rear. Without it, you may only see the staging lanes with that N20! Seriously, the 4th gen rear is basically the same rear as ours. Do you think it will hold, i doubt it. On all motor, sure, for a while, but if you add the N20, forget about it. good luck with the swap

Well, I have seen these 10 bolts hold up to this much HP before, so I am hoping with a little luck it will last until I can build a quality 12 bolt or Ford 9".
Thank *** I am not doing the swap, I have already paid a good mechanic to do the job for me, that saves a lot of sweat of my back.
I will let you all know how she turns out!

Good luck either way! I figured i would have someone else do it too but after thinking about it i wanted to know what it was all about. I purchased a crate motor so i already had the engine. Right now i am in the process of putting it in. It only took a total of like 10 hrs to pull the old motor, it was not that bad! The new motor should be in by the end of the month, time pending. I saved a ton of cash so i picked up the miniram to take advantage of my other upgrades. I started like 2 months ago but if i spent everyday on it i would probally be just done with tuning it as close to perfect as i could get it by now. I hope to have it tuned in like a month, hopefully. later

Ya know, I would have loved to see what all goes into a motor swap in a 3rd gen, but time is limited in my line of work (that and tools and a space to do it). I am in the military and live in the officers quarters, it's like a big apartment, but I have no "toy" space what-so-ever. So, for the price and the ease of having a shop do the swap, I opted for this insted. I am just smiling from ear to ear thinking about this new motor. The car runs like 2 old people f- u- c- k- i- n- g stock....slow....slow....slow. With all the nice GOFASTER upgrades coming for this car, it will be like the fountian of youth for this almost 12 year old f-body. I cannot wait!
86IROCNJ your set up sounds like it will be nice when done, what is it, do tell! Details...

Lets just call it a money pit! It is a fastburn crate motor. I installed the hot cam and 1.6 ratio roller rockers, TPIS miniram 3, 52mm tb, 24lb/hr fuel injectors, stock dist, w/msd cap and rotor, 6al ignition w.blaster 2 coil, underdrive pullies, CSI water pump, Jet Hot coated Edelbrock TES headers, and a mess load of other things! I just ordered a Precision Industries Vigilante TC and i had the tranny worked to it's full potential. There are other parts as well like a combo cooler and new motor mounts, stuff like that. I am hoping for 12's with this set up just like it is. I will be tunning my own proms too. This setup should be good for 470hp and 435lbs/ft at the crank. Or so i have been told and from what i have seen with similar setups. With my budget pending, next year i plan to stroke it with the best internals and slap on an ATI blower with a 10-14psi range, whatever kits they have available, i have done little research on that yet! For the next year or so i think this should be pretty sweet! Finally all of my hard work , time, and well earned money will pay off. Lets just say that i got the motor a year ago and have been getting parts for it ever since! I think it is time to put it in. Only time will tell now! Good luck with your swap and post it when it is done. Later

Your not a downer... People must think I am a novice racer... Far from it actually. I ran high 11's in my 1992 Z28, so what makes people think I cannot do it again in a newly rebult 383? Hell, I may even take this car into the low 11's. I realize that there is more to running 11's than HP and a drive line... Duh>!
Let me list this and see if it helps people who think I have no idea what I am talking about... Now you will be able to see 11's is going to be easy.
Correction to block listed above, new parts will be installed.
383 rebuilt all forged (crank, pistoins, ect...) around 500HP.
Heads are Dart (alumin) flow over 300 out of box!
1.6 RR's
deep 280's cam
800cfm holley DP
Mallory HEI and 6AL Box
8.8 mm racing wires
200 shot of NOS..
28" Mickey ET slicks
roll cage
all auto meter gauges
5-point racing belts
sphon tourqe arm
3500 RPM stall
shift kit
4:10 gears
Eaton posi unit
hedman headers
3" dual exhaust
flowmasters with dumps mid way under car (3")
More to come...
But, as you can see, adding up that HP just as listed above, it comes out to over 700HP, which is way more than enough to pull 11's in the 1/4.
Maybe a few more suspenion modifications (drag shocks, LCA's, LCA relocator's, sub frame conectors, etc...)
The car will weigh about 3200lbs when done, which is about right in weight.
Anything else I am missing?
