Gas Milage on a 5.0?

I have a v6 3.1 now, and am considering getting a 5.0, or a 5.7, with teh 5.7 though, I think my insurance will go up. Neway, can anyone give me an approximation of what kind of gas milage I will get with the 5. Thank you.

I've got a 305 TBI with a 700R4 (overdrive). And I usually get about 16 or 17 MPG.

My 350 is currently getting about 3-5 mpg , but thats prolly due to a computer that hates my guts and a carb thats running rich, hehe

actually, a 350 (5.7) shouldn't be too much worse on gas than a 305 (5.0) would be, but it would probably be more powerful and alot easier (cheaper?) to modify as well, as aftermarket parts are plentiful for 350s, but not many companies make 305 parts.

I think a 5.7 would be only 1 or 2 mpg worse than a 5.0 at worst. The fuel milage difference would probably not even be noticeable.

are you swapping the V8 or buying a V8 car? the insurance company doesn have to know that you swapped engines.

I had a 5.0 TBI, with a 5 spd, and 3.08 diff.
I was putting on 300 - 400 miles per tank at a speed of 75 mph or so @ 2000 rpm. I needed 91 octane to have no knock and ping because my timing chain is stretched.

I built a 350 keeping the TBI , computer and fuel injectors. I put in a decent cam. I am making Approx 300 hp and 375 lbs.ft of torgue. The engine is still being broken in. (only 3000 miles to date) I have the same mileage as before now running on 87 octane.

My stock T5 tranny in my 1991 gives me AWESOME mileage on the freeway. That overdrive is awesome, and the stock 2.73s.

I know the 5.7 shouldn't be much worse than the 5.0 on gas, its just the insurance hit that i'm concerned about. I'm right now, basically debating between buying another car, with which they would know about the enging, or putting in a 5.0, 5.7 and a manual transmission. Its just a matter of if I can get a decent deal on the parts, and if someone I know has the time to help me get it done. Also, I really want a manual transmission, I have completley had it with teh automatics, waiting for the things to shift. Ive discovered its hard to find camaros with a manual, and all but impossibly to find a custome 5.7 with one.
Ive been getting nothing with gas milage in my 3.1, like 10MPG, somthing is diefinalty wrong there. I actually thought that was normal untill now, and that a 5.0, or 5.7 would be even worse. But I will probably get better millage with the bigger engine that is actually working right.
Thanks for the help.

Gas MPG:
305 TPI Auto 14 city & 22/25 highway.
350 TPI Auto 13 city & 20/23 highway
With the 350 I should have better city MPG, but for a heavy right foot.

The insurance will depend on your record. Personally I have an '86 firebird with a v8 (The size of the v8 doesn't matter with the insurance) and a '92 camry. I have liability on both and pay the EXACT same amount of insurance for both! (which is $47 a month) The reason for the same amount is that because my Firebird is so old the insurance has dropped on it, despite the fact that it's a sports car. We'll see how my recent Speeding ticket affects that though....

Nope, bought it, paid for everything myself. My father gave me $1000 towrds my first car, that was it. I make about $100 a week working, i'm still in high school, so not full time of course. Ive made some decent money actually on buying & selling cars, that mainly how I manage to afford it, that and I don't eat, or buy clothes or anything else, but I love my car . And I definalty use it enough for it to be worth it. About 2.2k a month.

I have tow 305's and do a combined city/highway driving on a daily basis. About 60% highway and 40% city.

1987 Trans Am 305 TPI 20 mpg
1992 Camaro 305 TBI 24 mpg

I am pretty happy with the mileage. But if I get slap happy with the right foot it will go down very quickly.

I have a LG4 (weak 305) with a T5 and I get about 17mpg. About 70% highway, 30% city, but I usually drive in 5th (about 60-70) so that's how I keep good mileage.

Every car that you see with a for sale sign write down the number, keep your ears open for people selling cars, work at a gas station where you hear about alot of people selling cars, know people who know of alot of people selling cars. Know how to talk to people when buying or selling a car. Thats what you do. Talk people down in prices, buy them cheap. Shine them up real nice and fix anything wrong with it you can without spending too much money. Then go and sell them for top dollar. Thats basically it. I have only done it a couple times, this camaro I ment to sell, but I liked it. My favorite was teh $800 explorer, that went for $2500.

LO3 305 5.0 TBI and I get about 12-13 miles per gallon. Thats with very little highway driving. BTW I am 17 and I have liability only and I only pay 78 bucks per month! Also the size of the V8 shouldnt matter at all! At least it doesnt to my insurance company.

I hope from these responses that you can see that it isn't "5.0" vs. "5.7", or in your case, even "3.1" that makes the difference. The setup and condition, along with driving style, are what determine gas mileage.

FWIW, I get about 16 commuting with a lot of "on-ramp testing", about 18 commuting without that testing. I haven't had it on a pure road trip, but on a tank that consisted mainly of driving to the airport and back (it's 48 miles one-way), it got 22 (which included some around-town as well).

Of course, the '57 gets around 8 mpg. But, most of its miles are put on in 1320' segments...

First question my insureance company asked when I told them I was getting a camaro was did it have a 350? So I guess they have a higher rate for the 5.7L.

I have a 305 HO with the stock computer-controlled Q-Jet, and the stock 3.73 gears, and the stock .76:1 T- OD. I'm glad I get worse gas mileage than you TPI guys.... it dependably gets 20 mpg on the highway, and around 14-15 in town.

you'll have to check with your ins. company but when i was younger i had a hard time getting to insure me. some wouldnt have insured me at all if it was an original 8cyl car(one good thing about buying a 6cyl and putting in the 8 yourself)

I know they asked me if it was an RS, or Z28, then what type of engine it had. I actually found a nice Iroc I want for sale, so its time to give them a call, i'm not sure if its a 305 or 350 though.

If the eighth digit in the vin is an E or F it's a 305
TBI TPI
If it's an 8 it's the 350 TPI

Its a 305, really nice car, but its going to be a ticket machine. Red car, big exhaust, really heavy tints on the window. The stickers all over it, have not nice things about hondas and other imported cars on it, which is going to cause someone with a honda to key the thing eventually. I found another 305 manual though, thats a little less conspicous, needs a bit of minor cosmetic work though. Thanks to everyone who helped me out here.

with everything in my signitrure, except the supercharger, I usually run to the gas station once a week. Thats about 22-27 miles to the gallon. But this is only when i dont accelerate hard, and go the speed limit. So if your nice to your car, it will be nice to your pocket, if properly tuned.

Just to add another data point:

305 TPI, BW (M39) 5 spd, limited slip 3.45 gears
No MAJOR modifications.

14.5 - 18 mpg City
23 - 27 mpg Highway

Average over last three years - 16 mpg.

I tend to drive it like I own it and I own it purely for the pleasure of driving it. However, I don't drive it like I stole it.

I'm also 17 and i love my car...but dont know very much about it just that it goes fast and is fun in the rain!!....my dad is supposed to be that primary driver, and he's got a good record so my insurance is only $750 a year!! its great!!

well, you are definitley crazy, or just plain rich too be payin 7 bucks for gas...thats nuts that its that high...i think that 1.65 is high here in south O.C. but i guess these cars are really fun considering that half the cars out there weigh about 100 pounds, have like 25 hp and get about 100 mpg, so i guess a camaro would be pretty fun out there!!!

are you talking $7 per gallon at the US currency rate? or pounds? since this wouldn't be too bad that way?

My 83 T/A with LG-4, 5-speed, 3.73, CC Carb, no cat, Flowmaster, LG-4 Manifolds, timing advanced to 16 degrees, stock cam, stock heads, stock intake is hitting about 25 mpg on the highway and about 17-19 in town. Just don't get in the secondaries and you get good milage. It has run a best of 2.2 60' and 16.30's at 82mph granny shifting (that means off the gas, push the clutch in, shift into the higher gear let off clutch and then smack the gas pedal to the floor)

When I picked up my 89 IROC with a 350 in Minnesota I averaged about 25-27 mpg while cruising at about 80 mph on the way home. After I got back I averaged around 18 mpg around town. This also was with about a 10 mintue warm up every morning before I left.

My 305 TBI got 25 mpg highway-that's with 3.73s in the rear. Of course, having a t-56 with .5 overdrive helps a ton---80 mph at 2,000 rpm is great!!

ok did anyone mention this? He asked how much would his insurance go up if he got a 350? right? When your insurance agent asks for the imformation on your car, he asks you for the VIN number. What kind of engine do you have now? Reguardless of what engine you put in the car. The insurance will be based on the VIN number. SO whatever the car came with will be what your insurance is based on.

It's one thing not the tell the insurance company what engine you have. But if you are in an accident, even if it isn't you're fault and they take pictures and see the wrong engine they can deny payment for having an illegal vehicle. I'm taking a chance with my car. I replaced my 305 with a 350. They are both TBI's but my new one is dressed up also. (Can't have tons of power without looking good when someone wants to see what's under the hood.)

And for the gas mileage I was getting 30 mpg going 80 mph on a trip. I have 3.08 gears with a T-5 witht he TBI's .62 overdrive. THat's witht the original engine. I'm getting about 31 or 32 with the 350. I chose a cam that makes excellent low end torque to help with take off and cruising on the highway.

My gas mileage sucks...305 mild cam t-350 trans and 3.73s ( I think) I tach about 2700 rpm @ 60 mph...Burn a quarter tank of gas to school everyday. That plus $134 a month insurance on a $200 car doesn't help either.

Stock fuel usage according to what the engine produced when new:

http://www.epa.gov/otaq/tclrep.htm

Was in fact looking into this last night for the same reason as the topic starter, figured this would be the best place to look, and in fact is. Seems that the avg for a 5.0 should be around 20mpg's - 24mpg's and a little less on the 5.7. Amazing how the little 2.8's and 3.1's use close to the same as the 5.0's. Heh.
