Ok
Alright, I got it I can't switch the tranny parts out.
I got the 86 camaro for $200. the body is in great shape and the engine was locked up. I pulled that 2.8 out and want something better. I can get a 3.4 block for $500 from a junk yard with 91,000 miles on it but i would have to use my intake and all that stuff, I can get a 305 from a 86 iroc z28 that runs perfect for $500 but I would also have to spend more money on making it work. so anyone know what the best bet is on this car?

The 3.4 makes a lot of economic sense. Much less hassle, too.
For max performance potential, V8 is the only way to go. However, you've already spent too much on this project for it to make economic sense (take that from a graduate of the school of hard knocks).

so you think that if i went ahead and did the 3.4 would it be alot better than the orginal 2.8. I dont really need to go race it but i dont want it to be like some old slow car. 3.4 good for that? or should I still work on this 305 or 350? The reason I wanted a 305 is because I have a 2.4 cylender nisson altima and its pretty slow. and the 2.8 was as well so im thinking that a 3.4 would pretty week as well. how good is a 3.4.
thank you.

my friends 1995 Monte Carlo z34 with a 3.4 is almost as fast as my 91 camaro with 305 5 speed. And his motor makes more horsepower than mine. it makes like 220hp and i make less than 180hp.
Then this 3.4 may just sound pretty good than. I guess I might put it in and build a 350 over time and eventually swap for that but I just need this car to run in 3 months. But I really didnt like the way the 2.8 sounds (not talking about how the engine sounds how "2.8" sounds) and thinking I could get a 350 do the work and get it running reall nice but it seems that it would be a hell of alot of work just to get it and im not really trying to be the fastest out there, just dont want to be the slowest.
A 3.4 would be good. I have a 3.4 mpfi in my grand am. It's 170 hp and 200 lbft of torque. If you went Carb it would prabably be around the same thing. The 2.8 was in the 140 hp range. My Grand am has the same gears in the transaxle as my firebird with a 305 They make the same horsepower but the 305 has about 50 more lbft of torque. The firebird is faster, but aerodynamics and the fact that the grand am weighs about 900 lbs more doesn't help. But it gets 32 mpg compared to the firebird at 27.
