How to get a 305 into 13's E.T.

CHP had this article that I would like to share. I know alot of us want to maximize the 305 so here is some tips that can get you there.

That series of articles (it was a series, not just one article) has been closely followed by those on this board, commented on often, and the consensis is CHP sacrificed achieving their stated goals to pleasing their advertisers.

Wrong headers, wrong exhaust, wrong cam. Never touched the torque converter. Didn't do enough to the heads. Could also argue wrong intake manifold. Cheated on excution vs. promises from the outset (replaced the shortblock, didn't include that in the costs). All of their track times are elevation-corrected rather than actual.

With gears, tires, and a tranny that actually shifts from 2-3 at WOT, I'm sure I'd hit the 13's at sea level.

Now they're building a 350 for it. Dyno'd it with a non-CC q-jet and distributor, didn't use the actual dual snorkel air cleaner, did use the shortie headers and y-pipe but no cat, still claimed they were showing "emissions legal" dyno output.

Hey, I appreciate their efforts. I just don't think they're going about it in the best way, nor are they being completely honest with us.

Is the whole part usage because of advertisers and lack of honesty why it took over $4000 to see mid-high 15's

before they decided to put in the bigger motor, it had taken almost $5000 to see mid-low 15's. and i had been wondering why that was

My L69 could have done that when i got it, and with no mods either!!!

yea, they must be BS'ing the readers cause they said it ran a quarter of like high 18's stock, and theres no way that can be right, L03's are slow, but not that slow. or maybe the driver didnt know what he was doing, since it was a stickshift i think. Basically after reading the articles, i didnt have as much trust in the magazine.

Nitrous has been around for awhile. I'm sure most members on the board know all it takes to hit 13's with a 305 is a power adder. CHP was probably carrying bricks in their trunk during all the track runs.

I think a better series of articles would be 'the frugal formula' from GMHTP. It's a 305 TPI that they're doing performance proving on. So far all they've done is dynomax 1 5/8 headers and a dynomax catback and the car dyno'd at 206.2hp & 286.7tq @ the wheels... it's a 305tpi and the mods are budget focused but it's a more honest approach than CHP's as far as "proving performance" goes. It's got over 100k miles on the clock to boot! They stated specifically that they're not rebuilding it - as the series is budget minded. Hence the use of the word frugal.

That's a mild engine. However, it is really cool that it's completely emissions legal no matter where you go. A good example IMO.

I think that article though, is bad. $5,100??? You could put a near 290hp/355tq 350 in it for $2,200(or around that much). Given you go to a Chevy dealer to buy the engine, they'll prolly add 10-15% to their order price then plus taxxes. Then just go to a local shop and get the exhaust done for another $1,000. $3,200; that leaves us with $1,900 for slicks/axle/tranny (given we use his junkyard car).

I put one of these in my truck

I don't know, does a 350 qualify as a "bolt-on mod"?

My 305 TPI/5spd ran 13.9s w/ only a cam, exhaust, and a few bolt-ons. That's w/ stock heads too.

I could believe and 18 second car if it had the 2.73 gearing. Throw in an automatic and it would seem like foreever.

1987 formula w/ 305 5spd and 3.27 rear. Plus there's nothing that can't be transferred over to a 350 when the time comes--that's a key factor. As soon as you reach 13s you'll want to hit 12s

I didn't read the article, but unfortunately, a mag isn't going to list parts unless the manufacturer is paying for it. Searching the boards here is a much better solution.
