question about a 383

I can get a 350 block for around 100 bucks that is good, to make a 383 do i get a 400 crank, 350 pistons, and bore it .060 over? making it a 383? I found a crank on jegs for aorund 300 so it seems i can do it pretty cheap, im looking to make a torque monster with some decent heads and cam and still stick with tpi...

There are probably more ways to build a 383 than you could ever imagine, go to the search board and do a search for 383* and you will come up with many answers on this subject.
Good luck!

a 383 stroker motor is a 350 bored .030 over with a 400 crank.

A 383 doesn't neccesarily use a 400 crank, it merely has a 3.75" stroke which is the same as the stroke on a 400 crank. You can use a 400 crank in a 350 block, but you'll have to enlarge the main journals since it is bigger than the mains of a 350. You can also buy stroker cranks for a 350 which require no machining of the mains because they cast them with the same journals as a 350. Like said above, there are a million and a half different ways to build a 383 (or 377, or 388... )

OK, I knew it was something like that, I couldn't exactly remember, it was like 3 am when I posted. Probably shouldn't do that any more....

just wanted to put my 2 cents in....i did a 383 in my 88iroc convert.. these are a few things i ran into....first off, i suggest using a specially made 350 stroker crank, just makes stuff more simple. Heres the difference in the 2 cranks(i dont know if anyone went over this alreayd and im too lazy to read tonight)..350 interanlly balanced...400 externally balanced...Unexpected things i ran into were...u need a 400sbc balancer, still available from GM so that was a simple one. the the biggest prob i ran into was finding a flywheel(externally weighted for the 400 crank). i had a 5spd and could not find and Externally balanced flywheel for a 400. now before u say im a sped,...let me say i was trying to find a 153 tooth flywheel(not 168 tooth..i think those are the numbers)...i couldnt, so i ended up using my 350 flywheel and unbolting the weight off the 400 168 tooth one i got(168 would not clear t5 bellhousing), i then measured the location and welded it to the 350 flywheel...worked fine and never gave me a problem while i had the car...other than the flywheel it was basic...so just keep all that in mind, if u stick with a special stroker crank, u can use your balancer and flywheel/flexplate still, if you go for a 400 crank...u need to replace those as well....hope that helps a lil..

if its a one piece rear seal block, hes forced to buy a 383 crank. There was never any 1 peice 400's made for cars or trucks.

SmokingSS, you could have taken that 400 flywheel, and a 350 flywheel to a machine shop and they could have balanced that 350 exactly to the 400 weight, you mount both flywheels on a balancer at the same time, just 180* opposite of one another and add the weight as needed to the 350 flywheel...a little more exact than the way you did it.

yea true, i didnt really think of that at the time, sorta was a last minute hurdle i hit while getting the car together. i just wanted the drivetrain in and done with. i regret selling that car now, i sold it for just the amount of money i had into the engine alone...oh well....its just money and a car...always replaceable
but here was the motor .... speed-o-motive long block, dart iron eagle II heads, weiend stealth intake, doug herbert billet roller cam, solid roller lifters, crane roller 1.6 ratio race rockers, holley 750, pete jackson timing gears, MSD billet distributor, msd 6A ignition, edelbrock TES headers, flowmaster cat back...i'd tell people it was the stock 305 just with tall valve covers..hehe

Just to help if someone else runs into this......

Centerforce makes a flywheel designed for an externally balanced 383 / 400 combo, which is for a 1 piece rear main seal and fits under the T5 bellhousing.
