383

Ok here goes... I have been looking around for engines... and my choice is now on a 383 (I know.. probably in 2 months when it is time to put it in I'll might look for something else... hush ) I want to keep the stock hood so you guys have any suggestion on the intake and heads I should put on it? I'd like to make around 350 hp and 400 torque... what would be the price for that? would I be better off with a new tranny, driveshaft and diff with that kind of numbers? and I'd like the Hooker 3" cat back... would it be overkill? ::takes a deep breath:: thanks in advance

350HP and 400TQ are low numbers for a 383. As for clearing the hood with an intake and carb, I have heard of several people running a performer rpm intake, carb and 3" dropbase filter and clearing the factory hood.

From my own experience, if you run vortec heads, the performer intake for them is over an inch taller than the performer for standard heads, so with a regular performer, vortec heads and a 3" K&N with a 2" drop, my wingnut touches the hood.

As long as you dont have a T-5 you should be fine transmission wise, although 700r4's tend not to last too long under a lot of torque and abuse. Stock driveshaft is fine as is the stock rearend as long as you arent running slicks.

ok.. for the hp and torque I was throwing minimal numbers... can I just rebuild my tranny or should I really get another one altogether? and I don't know what you mean about 2" drop? as for the performer intake.. you mean the one you usually use for stock heads? but 383 didn't came in 3rd gens... I don't understand? I'm completely green in this so please... explain a bit.. I don't want to pay for an engine, drop it in the engine bay than see that it won't fit...

a 383 and a 350 are physically the same size because they are made from the same block. When people here talk about a 383 they are not talking about the old Mopars. They are referring to a 350 bored .030 with a 400 (or similar) crank. Hope this helps.

I believe he is saying that anything you coudl put on a stock 350 you can put on that because physically they are the same on the outside.

Is the 2 inch drop thing you are tlaking about a different pan for the tbi/carb? its where instead of the whole unit sittin on top of the tbi/carb, the bottom half drops down and the filter sits lower?

I hope im right
cheers!

You should be able to put a standard set of heads like a set of Trick Flow 23* 195cc aluminum heads, a performer rpm intake and a 3" open element and should be able to clear. A 2" drop base just means that your air cleaner drops down and sits lower than the level of the carb by 2" for extra hood clearance.
