327 swap
327 swap
Hey everyone, did some searching, but didn't find everything i needed to know. New guy on the forum here, have had the Z for nearly a year. But anyway onto the real post ...
I recently aquired a 67 327 engine and was planning on swapping it in early may after I'm out of high school and had a few questions before I started the swap. First, I have an 83 crossfire camaro and was wondering whether or not the distributor from it would work with the 327, I couldn't really find whether it is comp controlled or if it is mechanical. Also, was told by the previous owner that it has a high lift cam, over .500, fuelie heads ... which check out, ... intake is 2.02 and exaust is 1.6, has a torker II intake manifold, and supposedly in his 70s monte carlo with 4.88 gears(way too much I think) he was running low 13s in the quarter with a Turbo 350 tranny. Anyway, it has no carb, came with a new fuel pump so I'll run with that one and an inline filter, but I was also wondering what a good carb would be. He had an edelbrock 750 before selling it, and I wasn't sure what the best choice would be for that. It revs up to somewhere between 6500 and 7000rpms. I'll be running a less than llegal exaust, headers to 2.5 pipes to some sort of glass pack or muffler of some sort, exiting just before the rear axel. Anyway, just wondering what kind of power this thing is probably making and what my best choices for a carb and distributor will be. Oh, he also had a 1/2" carb spacer which I may or may not keep depending on clearence issues. I'll use the stock transmisson and 2.73 gears untill something dies on me, should have more than enough saved up for a rebuild. Well, I'm done rambling on, whats everyone think?
BTW, heres a pic before I degreased and cleaned it up ...

welcome to the boards...another 327 in omaha..!!!
do the heads have accessory holes? Are the studs screwin style? If not you may want to look into different heads....with that cam, you are headed for trouble on stock 327 heads.....Hey, if you need any help with your project, let me know. I'd be glad to help....Ditch the torquer II ..a dual plane would be much more streetable.....I have a HEI distributor I swapped out of mine if you need one...I'm not sure if the cross fire is computer controled or not....what tranny you running?
you will most likely make around 275-300hp at the fly wheel....Ive got mine up to around 375-390...let me know if I can help,

Omaha must be all about the 327s, I'm looking at picking one up before too long if I ever decide to go pull it out.

Yeah, the heads have accesory holes in them, and they are double hump fuelie heads off the 60s Vette, so I'd imagine they'd be allright for what I'm doing. The studs are screw in style. Also, for the intake, what would you recommend other than the Torker II, Performer or something like that? Also, I'm using the stock 700r4, I'm guessing that might not hold up for very long depending on the power this is really putting out. Also, that HEI you have laying around sounds like a pretty good deal. Any help would be greatly appreciated, hoping to have this in within a week after May 6th or so.

Brain fart there, I'm an idiot and forgot what a hole looked like and there are no accessory holes on the heads.
Lets see, casting number looks to be a 3890462 on the heads. They're the large camel hump heads.Anyway, got home a little late tonight after seeing a movie with some friends, I'll try and catch you sometime tomorrow Ron, that or monday possibly. And for the second brain fart of me not reading about the second size for the valves, they're the 1.94/1.50 valves ... rulers are good things. Oh, when will I ever learn.

yup 462's...just took a pair of them off my motor and bought a nice set of 416's...Those are good flowing heads, they are just a pain to mount the alternator and power steering 2...there is really no good way to do it...believe me I tried....
The people on this board are a great rescource (sp) and you will learn a lot, if ya hang around...and the best part is it's all free!
I'm hauling my car to my garage today, over in the Bluffs. Finally I get to start putting her back together...if ya call and I'm not home just leave a message and your # and I'll call ya when I get in this evening....Maybe I can give ya a little "insight" on your swap..Im no pro , like some of the guys here, but I know a little about these cars...and the 327..

the power steering is the toughest to mount without the holes..The alternator can be "rigged" I didnt have too much problem with it..the PS will be missing this bracket......you could do what I am doing and ditch the PS all together and swap in a S10 manual steering box.....here is the problem bracket..(thanks RB for the pic!)
Jebus, never expected that much out of a $1150 engine ... well I'll need to spend more to finish it, but for what I have now. Either way, I'll give a call here in a little while, if you're not around, I'll leave my cell # and hopefully we can meet up or something, sometime. I need to find an exaust shop that'll sell me some 2.5" exaust tubing and also find a carb somewhere. My friend's father might be selling his 750 edelbrock carb, but that might be a little too much for somewhat of a daily driver. And I need tires and rims, wow this is going to take a while. Luckily the engine came with an alternator bracket, but the ps might be a problem, I'll have to look into it to see how everythign will connect in for me. BTW, is there any horrible problems with just not having the pup connected to a belt. I know I won't have power steering, but as long as all the lines are connected, will anything be hurt by having it just sit in the engine bay, secured down. Thanks for the help so far.
