Corvette L98 vs. Camaro L98

Hi all, I have a question concerning the blocks used on the two of these engines. Did the Corvette L98 engines come with 4-bolt mains, or 2-bolt mains, or did it vary?

I have been told and was under the impression that the Corvettes had the 4-bolt main blocks and the Camaro/Firebird blocks were 2-bolt. I bought a block from someone claiming it was an 87 vette L98 block, when it arrived it had 2-bolt mains. He's claiming that he knows that GM didn't make 4-bolt mains after 1980, which I know is untrue because the block casting number (14093638) made during 87-95, had both 2 and 4 bolts. That has proven time and time again through my research.

Anyway, if anyone knows anything about this please help.....

Block casting # 14093638

Thanks, Greg

He said his research proved that some of the 14093638 blocks were 2-bolts and some were 4-bolts, which shows that the guy that sold him the engine doesn't know what he's talking about. His question is whether or not he can tell if his engine is a 'vette engine by the number of bolts.

I think you need a

No, vette engines did not have 4 bolt mains in the C4 and later models L98's. now 350 truck engines had 4 bolt mains. Now see what his research says.

I have a 4 bolt main one piece rear seal block sitting at home. I can post a picture or 3 if you like. One piece rear main=86 or newer FYI.

Corvettes having a 4 bolt main is just a myth.

DJP87Z28, do some research of your own before replying to topics like these. The blocks that came in the 86-92 TPI Camaro's had two bolt main blocks. The Same casting #(ie. the same block) was used for the 4-bolt main blocks of these years, and they were used on what GM says is heavy duty trucks AND Sports Cars. Obviously not the Camaro's or Firebirds, so what are they refering to as "Sports Car?"

MadMax, thanks for the reply, but I know what a 4-bolt main looks like. What do you mean FYI? Sorry just not registering the lingo.

Thanks, Greg

If you could read, I said L98 corvette blocks were 2-bolt mains and some truck blocks were 4-bolt mains. No where did I mention casting numbers. Start by understanding what you read... Also your original question was about a vette block having 4-bolt mains, again

Just out of curiosity... did the Corvette L98s have aluminum heads? I've been told they do, but haven't even had a chance to look at a Vette L98, so i can't say for certain.

Well, I didnt know. IIRC its a 638 casting number on the block. They did make them after 86 though, I was just offering to post a pic of a one piece rear seal block with 4 bolt mains for the doubters.

As for the 4-bolt Corvette thing, thats wrong. Check any Corvette board. A good friend of mine used to run a place called Nero Corvette, though they are no longer around I'm sure many people have heard of it. He says the same thing about the 4-bolt Corvette deal, and I'd like to think someone that specialized in them would know.
