v8 swap - v6 A/C and Suspension compatible?
v8 swap - v6 A/C and Suspension compatible?
I have a v6 car that is getting a v8...(I don't need the yoohah about that)
But, will the stock v6 suspension be adequate until I can afford new parts? The fender sits about 2 1/2 inches above the tires (currently 215-65/15s)
Also, will the A/C compressor from a 91 camaro 2.8 v6 be compatible with a 350?? a '73 vette 350??
And the power steering pump....it has to be from a v8 right? is it year specific? I have a '92 that I'm putting the v8 into.

V6 springs and suspension parts work fine. Actually, the V6 springs are a little softer, and may give you a better launch off the line. I left mine in my car and have had no problems to date. Your compressor SHOULD work, but you will need different brackets for it, and I believe the power steering pump to be the same.
Are you using a serpentine setup, or v-belt?

Quick Trans Am!! Just the man I wanted to hear from!! I've been reading your older posts on how to swap into a v6. Where I was confused at first, now I know exactly what to do to get ready.:hail:
I don't know yet what kind of belt setup...that is determined by the engine itself, right? I've actually never heard of v-belt before...

Glad to help. Here's what I need to know from you: I imagine you are going carb setup, am I correct? Did the engine have any accessories on it? To answer your question about the v-belt, you can see them on most '86 (I think) and older fbodies, the multi-belt setup. Serpentine is the one belt that drives all the accessories. Your '91 has a serpentine setup. The '73 vette used a v-belt. You can use either setup, it depends on what you prefer. If you do use V-belt, the pulley on that power steering pump has to be changed.
No, actually I'm putting a pre-87 TPI setup on it. I have the computer also. So I'm going to use the serpintine setup. The engine doesn't have anything on it right now cause it's in the machine shop, and before then it was nothing but a rusted block...no accessories. I'm already collecting the correct parts...here is my to-do list before I get the engine back next monday:
-get altenator from tim
-reassemble john's metric/american socket kit
-get A/C compressor from Tim's car(purge first)
-get a power steering pump
-get replacement clutch assembly
-get battery cables that match the length to starter on 350
PRE-DISSASSEMBLY :
-take off auto tranny, bolt on v6 T-5 bellhousing to measure and cut the hole for the shifter
-remove hood
-drain the radiator and remove it, keep the tranny cooler, drain the oil
AFTER PAINLESS TPI HARNESS :
-find a windshield wiper motor that matches the harness and install it
>>>I guess you might have noticed that...uhh..I also decided to replace the auto tranny with a T-5. hehe
Even though that complicates things further....but anyway it will all work out right with enough effort.

Ok, your pre '87 TPI used a v-belt setup, and the serpentine is used on '88- '92 TPI setups. You can use either or. Just a couple things to remember for this. If you are using a '88 or newer serpentine setup:
The compressor is mounted on the passenger side of the engine, and the alternator is on the driver side. On the v-belt setups, they are opposite. You can reuse your compressor, and power steering pump on those since you are going this route. A v6 alternator won't work. They are cast differently, so the spot to mount them won't match. Don't forget you'll need a V8 flywheel to match that setup too. I wanted to put one in my ride, but I just didn't have the time to do it. You'll also need a different PROM, one without the automatic transmission too. You could always lengthen your battery cables as well, that's a thought. It's what I did, and it only cost me about $8.
