305 to 350 questions
Right now i have a 305 tbi and want to put in a 350 from GM. Will everything work for the 350 that worked for the 305? If i keep the tbi will i still have a good gain in horsepower from the 305 to 350? Please respond. Thanks guys.

1. Yes. Except, you'll need 350 injectors, a 350 knock sensor, and maybe some chip work or at the least a 350 chip.
2. That depends on the 350 you put in. You'll get more torque for sure.

I was going to put in a HO crate motor 350 from GM. There is a pic of it and the link is below. Will i be able to use everything from the 305 except for the injectors, knock sensor and chip work? Also will i notice a gain in performance?

This exact question gets asked so often it should be a sticky or something.
That motor has Vortec heads, so the intake ports are in a different place from your TPI intake. The only way to make TPI work right on it is with the Scoggin-Dickey TPI base for Vortec heads (about $400 on top of the motor itself).

Duh.. sorry about that.
You need a Vortec-specific intake of some sort, since the ports are in a different place. I don't know if anybody makes a TBI one like that or not, since TBI and performance kind of don't go in the same sentence for the most part. However, you can put almost any Vortec carb intake on it, with a TBI adapter; that's what most people do. Alternatively, if you don't care if it runs good or not, you could use a stock Vortec truck intake.

I'm getting ready to do this swap myself in a couple of weeks. I've already started ordering the parts after doing TONS of research on this and other message boards. JPrevost & Z28 Boy have both done this exact conversion, so I am hoping to get some help from them. I plan on updating my web site at http://www13.brinkster.com/scbaeb/camaro/ as I go through the swap. I'll probably start doing updates to the site on this coming Monday. I have compiled a pretty thorough spreadsheet of the required parts, so let me know if you're interested. Just for starters, I found the best deal on the 350 HO motor at Griffith Automotive in Missouri for $2084 + freight...it definitely pays to shop around. Also, I'm going to a 454 TBI, which I found at a junkyard for $95. Let me know if you're interested in more info, but I'm still learning myself

Yeah i would appreciate if you gave me the details on this swap and what i will need and a price if you could. I was thinking of maybe staying with a new 305 but to me this doesnt make sense although everything would work from the old engine. If im going to be getting a new engine it might as well be a 350. Is this a hard swap to do or will it be fairly easy. Also if i ordered that engine what parts can i use from my old one and what else will i need to get for the new one. Thanks guys

Here's a rough breakdown of the major parts for my engine swap:
305 HO engine: $2200
Vortec intake: $220
Intake bolts/gaskets: $25
TBI adapter plate: $40
TBI gaskets: $10
454 TBI: $100
350 knock sensor: $25
Harmonic balancer: $70
That totals about $2700, but that doesn't include all the little stuff you may need like spark plugs, motor oil, coolant, radiator hoses, sensors, etc.
And, of course, that also does not include the majorly reprogrammed PROM I will have to burn to get everything running correctly. Fortunately, I have access to a burner at work, so I just have to invest about 100 hours of research in figuring out how the heck I'm going to determine the ideal PROM settings for my setup. The chips themselves are cheap...about $6 I believe. However, the bin file you put on the chip will be worth a million bucks after all the time you invest in getting it optimized
.
As for what will swap over in your case, all of your accessories (alternator, AC compressor, etc.) will bolt up, as well as your distributor, flywheel/flexplate, air cleaner assembly, etc.
Hope that helps...

Well, for $3K you get a brand new engine that almost doubles the horsepower of the L03 (and it only has 45 more cubic inches). Still tryin' to figure out if it's worth it?
Just kiddin' man...to each his own, I guess. Engine swaps are pretty much at the heart of hot roddin', though...

Yeah well right now my LO3 needs about 1000 bucks in work to it and it wouldnt make sense to rebuild that engine and have the same slow car. It pays to put the 350 in and plus it would be close to the same price as rebuilding the 305.
