3.1 to built 350
hasnt been 24 hours since i brought home my new baby. (90 'bird 3.1) and already im hungry for muscle. not that my 3.1 is slow, its not. it just could be a lot better with a 350. i already have the motor sitting on the floor of the garage and the go fast goodies stored in my basement somewhere, i just dont have the time to do the swap right now. i have to pull the motor in my iroc and replace the rings i fried. anyway my question is this, how hard is it to squeeze that 350 in there? i already built the motor, tranny, and rear end for my iroc, so im pretty familiar with thirdgens and small block 350s, i just need to know whats involved in doing a v6 to v8 swap. is it a straight drop in? will i need new struts to handle the weight? any advice? thanks
There are a whole bunch of posts on this topic. I think you should surf through them and if you don't find what you are looking for, then I can probably answer any questions you have since I have dont he V6 to V8 swap.

also depends on if you are going with Carb, or TPI or something else. If you are going TPI, change your fuel pump, motor mounts, move the brake line on the engine support crossmember back, and everything will bolt right in. V6 springs will support a 350, they are softer than the V8 springs, and can give you better weight transfer off the line.

what about the throttle/shifter/TV kickdown cables? will they bolt right up to my new setup? im guessing they will but never hurts to ask. btw- yes im definitly going carb. not that i dont love the TPI in my iroc, but man they are a bitch to tune properly. a carb is something i can work on. oh one more question. i was planning on putting in a 700R4 (i know the v6 v8 bolt patterns are different but i have a v8 one somewhere around this mess) will the 700R4 function w/o the computer or will it stay in 1st forever?
If you swap over to a carb setup, you will need new a new throttle cable and kickdown cable. You can just get one off of a carburetored camaro and those will work. Also, Lokar makes both a throttle and kickdown cable that will work. That is what I have and I love the adjustability they offer. They are a little pricey, but worth it to me.
As for the transmission, yes it will work without a computer, but the if you want to retain the lockup feature, you will need to wire it up seperatley.
