Scrapping V8, back to stock
305 vs 350
'88 RS Swap was the plan. Big mess with sensors, some concern with wiring, then the trannie will probably burn out with the 350, so have to consider new trannie to handle the power--then there's the rear-end. Seems like more than we have time, experience, money for. Bought the car minus engine. Thinking of picking up a used 305 for about $450 and actually getting on the road. What are the chances the 305 will be any good for long? This is father/son project. Dad's time-limited, garage is small (and hot!). Son just wants to drive a cool car, bought the shell, thinks we can do anything. Mom's nervous, says stock engine best for new driver - safety and insurance-wise. Son can do V8 swap later in life. Just wants reliably running car. Advice on going with used 305?

305 vs 350, pls excuse V8 foopaw
OKAY .pretty dumb-sounding about the V8 Moving on to question: If big negatives on 305, haven't found any. Found some opinions about wasting time rebuilding one, and a couple of defenders. Seems main thing is not to nickle and dime on parts, but get everything intact from donor. Going with used has some risk, obiously. Goal is good looking, smooth running, quick, easy, least $. Any hints, advice, helps, warnings--all comments welcome. Thx!

If looks and saving $ are your main concern go with a 2.8. The size of your engine won't change the exterior, so make the body as shiny as you can. I am sure the 2.8 will save $ on gas in comparison to a 305 but I personally feel the 2.8 is underpowered for a camaro. It definitely doesn't sound "cool" either. The 305 is a pretty reliable engine. If you go with the 305 just make sure the person you are getting the 305 is pretty relaible aswell.
You can probably get your hands on a 305 setup without much of a problem. Most swaps go for the 350 because if you are doing the swap, you might as well. A 305 will sound cool and give you some playing power. If you are not looking for a race car, go for it. A 305 will be fun to drive.
