Is it possible...

ok here's the deal, i am a high school student in need of some help. i currently own a camaro with the 305tpi engine, is it possile to change the engine to a 350, and then storoke the 350 to a 427? My goal it to create the ultimate **** eater, i am looking for a lot of power here. If the swap were to work, what kind of transmission would you guys recomend? Thanks for your help

You can stroke and bore a 350 to about 388 (4.060" bore x 3.75" stroke), that's it.

If you want to go bigger than that, you need a bore that has been cast to "siamese" the cylinder walls, a la 400 or World Motown blocks. Then you can bore the cylinders to 4.200" and stroke to 3.85" to get that 427.

I'd just go with a 383. There is a HUGE selection of parts for sbc and they can be had for fairly cheap, depending on what you go with, not to mention there are about a billion 350s just laying around but not so much so with 400s. When you start getting into big blocks then you're gonna be looking at a little more money. **** is nothing.....a 427 is awesome but definite overkill to beat on imports since NONE of them knows what speed is Do you plan on retaining the stock intake setup? I have seen 383s with the tpi harness with an LT1 intake swap that have done some 12s and even 11s with a nice cam.
Another thing to keep in mind: power is great, provided you can get it to the ground. Whatever you go with, invest in some good sfc's and better torque arm (assuming you have the stocker) and any other suspension components that you can get your hands on.
Good luck on whatever you go with

I agree, go with the 383. Price wise you will be able to accomplish your goal and still have some cash to get some suspension work so you can use that torque... While a 427 is da bomb, you will spend a lot of money to get it all together properly. A Motown block is going to be about $2000 alone. You can get one hell of a stroker kit for $2000. Then spend another $800 or so on machining, less probably. Then a cam, some heads, and good headers. If you are able, port the stock TPI base yourself, siamese that is, so you can save money and help that puppy breath. Scope Ebay for some used high flow runners and port your upper. You will se 12s easy, once hooked up, and have a good car to drive around town...

Obviously there are lots of incidentals like hoses, plugs, gaskets, etc. Figure EVERYTHING up front to give yourself a reasonable budget.

Unless of course you are independently wealthy and money is of no object to you.

It is not possible to turn a stock 350 block into a 427.

You can build a 427 out of a stock 400 block. Stock 4.125" bore + 4.000" stoke = 427. Most people (myself included) will build that with a .030" overbore, for obvious reasons; that comes out to a 434.

None of that goes with a high-school student budget. Get yourself an education first, then worry about your motor. In the meantime, as long as you keep TPI, a 350 will suit you just fine. Extra inches simply reduce the RPM at which the TPI runs out of flow.

RB hit the nail on the head. A SBC 427 motor is something you build after school and have a well paying job becasue it will be exspensive. Stick with a 350 or 383 and you'll be happy, built the right way you'll beat 99% of imports.

All of this power that you are talking about and especially doing it with a 427 is going to cost mucho dinero. Being in high school you will never be able to afford it unless you have some big trust fund or something. Base your engine off of a 350 small block platform. Build a nice 383 that makes gobs of torque on the low end and decent horsepower on the top and not only will you be able to eat r*ce for breakfast, lunch, and dinner but you will also be able to break those wild ponies. The nice thing about a 383 is there are tons of cheap parts to build them.

All what i really have to say is go for your goal, if you really want a 427, scope out e bay and other sources and find a block. Dont let them tell you that you are in high school because i am in high school and i have a 496 cu waiting to be put in my camaro. that is as soon as i get it back from the machine shop. If you have the time, just keep picking at it until your income comes in, put so much money aside a week for it. But your best bet would be a nice 383. You can almost build these engines for a 350 but with some extra torque and horsepower bounus. But i will just stick with my stroker, a 496. he he

thanks for all your help guys! i think i will go with a 350 and stroke/bore to a 383. unlike most other people, i dont have a tight budget. Question 2, can i use a supercharger with a 383? i do not plan on using the tpi intake.

Yes you cn run boost on a 383, just as long as you have a forged bottom end. You'll want to run a centrifugal supercharger (or turbo if you have the cash/knowledge). Check out the power adder board, they'll be able to help you out.
